The James Bay Cree Communications Society, also known as JBCCS, is a special group that runs radio stations. It's a non-profit organization, which means it doesn't try to make money. Its main goal is to serve the Cree people living in the Eeyou Istchee area of Canada.
JBCCS helps nine local radio stations in different Cree communities. They provide daily news and important information. JBCCS also runs its own radio station, CHIU-FM, located in Mistissini, Quebec. This station has special equipment called repeaters that send its signal to five other Cree communities.
JBCCS was started in 1981. Its purpose was to offer daily radio programs in the East Cree language. These programs focused on Cree culture and community news. The first time JBCCS broadcasted in Eeyou Istchee was in June 1986. They did this through the CBC.
In 1998, JBCCS received money to build its own radio network. They used telephone lines to connect the stations. They also provided transmitters to communities that didn't have their own. The network officially started with celebrations in August 2001 in Chisasibi.
Radio Stations and Signals
Radio stations use transmitters to send out their signals. These signals travel through the air so you can hear them on your radio. JBCCS operates several stations and also uses "rebroadcasters" to make sure their main station, CHIU-FM, can be heard in more places.
Main Stations and Affiliates
The table below shows the main radio stations that are part of the JBCCS network. These stations are located in different Cree communities. Each station has its own special call sign, like CHFG-FM, and broadcasts on a specific frequency. The "Power" column shows how strong their signal is.

Rebroadcasters for Wider Reach
A rebroadcaster is like a helper station. It takes the signal from a main radio station, like CHIU-FM, and sends it out again. This helps the radio waves travel further and reach more listeners. The table below shows the rebroadcasters that help CHIU-FM reach more communities.
| City | Identifier | Frequency | Power | RECNet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eastmain | CHIU-FM-1 | 106.5 | 42 | Query |
