Who Was Sir James Buller East?

Sir James Buller East was an important person in British law and politics during the 1800s. He followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a successful lawyer and later serving in the British Parliament. His life shows how people contributed to their country through legal work and government service.

Early Life and Education

James Buller East was born in Bloomsbury, London, on February 1, 1789. He was the oldest son of Sir Edward Hyde East, who was also a very respected lawyer.

James went to Harrow School, which is a famous school in England. After that, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, a well-known university. He earned several degrees there, including a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in 1810 and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in 1824. He later received a special degree called Doctor of Civil Law in 1834.

A Career in Law

After finishing his studies, James Buller East became a barrister. This meant he was qualified to argue cases in court. He joined the Inner Temple on February 5, 1813. The Inner Temple is one of the four "Inns of Court" in London, which are professional associations for barristers.

As he got more experienced, he became a "bencher" of his Inn in 1856. This is a senior position that involves managing the Inn. In 1869, he became a "reader," which meant he gave lectures to new barristers. When his father, Sir Edward Hyde East, passed away in 1847, James inherited his father's title and became the 2nd Baronet.

Serving in Parliament

Sir James Buller East was also involved in politics. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He was elected to represent the town of Winchester in the British Parliament.

He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Winchester from July 30, 1831, to December 3, 1832. He lost his seat in the next election but was re-elected on January 10, 1835. He continued to serve as an MP until February 10, 1864. This means he was an MP for many years, helping to make laws and represent the people of Winchester.

Besides being an MP, he also held other important local roles. He was a justice of the peace and a deputy-lieutenant for Gloucestershire. A justice of the peace is a volunteer who helps with local legal matters, like minor court cases. A deputy-lieutenant helps the Lord-Lieutenant, who is the King's or Queen's representative in a county. Sir James was also a magistrate for Oxfordshire, which is another role in local law enforcement.
