James Corry (Irish politician) facts for kids
Colonel James Corry (1634 – 1 May 1718) was an Irish politician and soldier. He played an important role in the government and military of his time.
Early Life and Family
James Corry was born in 1634. His father, John Corry, was a merchant. The family originally came from Dumfries, a town in Scotland.
In 1641, James's father moved their family to Ireland. They first settled in Belfast. Later, in 1656, they moved to Fermanagh.
Military Service
James Corry began his military career in 1666. He was made a captain in the Fermanagh Militia. This appointment was given to him by the Duke of Ormonde.
By 1689, James Corry had risen in rank. He became the colonel of the Fermanagh Militia.
Political Career
James Corry held several important political positions. In 1671, he served as the High Sheriff of Fermanagh. A High Sheriff was a top official responsible for law and order in a county. He also served as High Sheriff of Monaghan in 1677.
During the Glorious Revolution of 1688, there were changes in who ruled England. James Corry's loyalty was questioned for a short time. However, in 1689, it was confirmed that he was loyal to King William III. He was then cleared of any accusations.
In 1692, Corry was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented County Fermanagh in the Irish Parliament. He continued to serve as an MP for Fermanagh until he passed away in 1718.
James Corry also became a deputy governor in 1697. In 1705, he was appointed the official Governor of Fermanagh. This was a very important leadership role in the county.
Family Life
James Corry was married three times. His first marriage was in February 1663 to Sarah Anketill. They had three daughters and one son, named John. Sarah passed away in 1683.
Later that same year, Corry married Lucy Mervyn. They had one daughter, who sadly died as a baby. Lucy also passed away some years later.
In 1691, James Corry married Elizabeth Harryman. This marriage did not result in any children. They later separated in 1696.
