James DeMott Condit facts for kids

James DeMott Condit was an important person in Wisconsin history. He served as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, which is like the state's law-making body. He also played a part in the American Civil War.

Life and Family

James DeMott Condit was born a long time ago, on April 22, 1821. When he was older, on October 5, 1848, he married Sarah A. Veazie. They had three children together. Sadly, Sarah passed away on September 21, 1876. Later, James married Abby M. Barker on May 20, 1878.

Serving in the Civil War

During the American Civil War, James Condit joined the Union Army. He became a captain in the 25th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This regiment was involved in big events, like the Siege of Vicksburg.

James had a brother named Ambrose. Ambrose traveled with the regiment as a sutler. A sutler was someone who sold goods like food and supplies to soldiers. Unfortunately, Ambrose became very sick and had to leave the army. He passed away on September 27, 1863. Before the war, Ambrose had worked as a Postmaster and Register of Deeds in Sparta, Wisconsin. James Condit himself owned a hotel in Sparta.

Political Career

James Condit was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly several times. The Assembly is where elected officials make laws for the state. He represented La Crosse County, Wisconsin in 1858. Later, he represented Monroe County, Wisconsin in both 1878 and 1879. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
