James Few was born in 1746. He grew up in Hartford, which is now part of Baltimore County, Maryland. His parents were William Few, Sr., and Mary Wheeler. Around 1758, James moved with his family to Orange County, North Carolina.

His Family Life

Around 1770, James Few married Sarah Wood in North Carolina. They had twins, William and Sarah, who were born on February 9, 1771. James may have worked as a carpenter. However, there are no old papers or records that prove this.

The Battle of Alamance

James Few took part in the Battle of Alamance. This battle happened on May 16, 1771, in North Carolina. It was a fight between a group of settlers called Regulators and the colonial government's militia. The militia was led by North Carolina's royal Governor, William Tryon.

His Final Days

On May 17, 1771, James Few was executed. This happened west of Hillsborough, North Carolina. He was executed by the North Carolina militia. This was the day after the Battle of Alamance. Governor Tryon's records show that James was executed at the militia's camp. This camp was about five miles northeast of the battlefield.

What Happened Next

After James Few's death, his children moved to Georgia. They lived with their grandparents there. His wife, Sarah, later married again. She married an officer who supported the British during the American Revolution. This type of person was called a Loyalist. Sarah then moved to Greenwood County, South Carolina. No one knows what happened to James Few's body. His family might have taken it. Or, he might have been buried in an unmarked grave by the militia.

His Brother, William Few

James Few's brother was William Few. William became famous for his service during the American Revolutionary War. He was an officer in the war. Later, he became a politician. He served in government in both Georgia and New York.
