James Edward Hasty (born May 23, 1965) is a former American football player. He was a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). He played for the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, and Oakland Raiders from 1988 to 2001. Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the Washington State Cougars.

Playing Career Highlights

Joining the NFL

James Hasty was chosen by the New York Jets in the third round of the 1988 NFL draft. He was the 74th player picked overall. He quickly became a key player for the Jets.

Star Cornerback

Hasty was known for his strong play as a cornerback. A cornerback is a defensive player whose main job is to cover wide receivers and stop them from catching passes. He was especially good at "bump and run coverage." This is a style where the defender physically bumps the receiver at the start of the play. This helps to disrupt their route.

Hasty was so good that he was selected for the Pro Bowl twice. This is an honor given to the best players in the NFL each season. He earned this recognition in 1997 and again in 1999. While playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, he and fellow cornerback Dale Carter were considered one of the best duos in the league.

Life After Playing Football

Coaching High School Football

After his NFL career, James Hasty became a football coach. From 2001 to 2004, he was an assistant coach at Bellevue High School in Washington. During this time, the team won four state championships in a row!

In 2010, Hasty returned to Bellevue High School. He became the defensive backs coach. Later, he took over as the defensive coordinator. He helped guide the team's defense.

Working as a Sports Analyst

James Hasty also shared his football knowledge with a wider audience. On May 3, 2006, he started working for ESPN. There, he was an analyst, which means he helped explain games and players. He covered both NFL and college football.

Personal Life

James Hasty was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity while attending Washington State University. His sons, J.R. and Tyler, also played football at Bellevue High School.
