James Johnson Kelly was an important officer in the United States Air Force. He was born on March 29, 1928, and passed away on December 29, 2018. Major Kelly served in the United States Army Air Force and later the Air Force. He was part of the famous 99th Fighter Squadron and 332nd Fighter Group. He also served during the Korean War and retired as a Major in 1971.
Early Life and Education
James Kelly was born in High Point, North Carolina. When he was young, his family moved to Lynchburg, Virginia.
Military Career

In 1946, James Kelly joined the Army Air Forces. He was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron and the 332nd Fighter Group. He started his military career as a Technical Sergeant. This is a rank for experienced non-commissioned officers.
Later, in 1955, he earned a special promotion called a "commission" at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. This made him an officer, starting as a First Lieutenant. He continued to serve for 28 years. By the time he retired, he had reached the rank of Major.
Major Kelly became an instructor for different types of airplanes, including the AT-6 and the Lockheed T-33 jet. He also became a Squadron Commander, which means he was in charge of a group of planes and pilots.
During the Korean War, Major Kelly received medals for his brave actions. He helped evacuate wounded Marines during a very tough battle called the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.
Life After Service
In 1959, James Kelly married Sally. He became a stepfather to her daughter and later had a son named Thomas Edward Kelly.
After his military career, Major Kelly was very active in his community in San Antonio, Texas. He held many important positions. He was part of the San Antonio Planning Commission. He also worked with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which is a civil rights organization. He was involved with the Community Workers Council of San Antonio. He also served as a trustee on the Our Lady of the Lake University Trustee Board.
Major James Johnson Kelly was buried with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on January 10, 2019.
