James Kerr Proudfit (born July 24, 1831 – died May 30, 1917) was an American military officer. He played a part in the American Civil War, a major conflict in U.S. history.

Early Life and Family

James Kerr Proudfit was born on July 24, 1831, in Argyle, New York. After his father passed away, he and his family moved to Brookfield, which was then part of the Wisconsin Territory. This was before Wisconsin became a state.

On September 20, 1855, James Proudfit married Emelie in Delafield, Wisconsin. They had six children together. He lived a long life, passing away on May 30, 1917.

Military Service and Public Life

When the American Civil War began, James Proudfit volunteered to join the Union Army. This was the army fighting to keep the United States together. He first served in the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

Later, he joined the 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This group of soldiers took part in important battles. These included the Siege of Vicksburg and the Jackson Expedition. In 1864, Proudfit became the commander of his regiment. He took over from George E. Bryant.

In 1865, he was given the honorary rank of brevet brigadier general. This meant he was recognized for his brave service. After the war, Proudfit continued to serve the public. He was the Adjutant General of Wisconsin from 1865 to 1868. This role involved managing the state's military affairs.

From 1872 to 1876, he worked as the U.S. Surveyor General for the New Mexico Territory. In this job, he helped map out land. James Proudfit also served in the Wisconsin Senate in 1866 and 1867. This showed his commitment to public service in his home state.
