James Lyon, 7th Earl of Strathmore (around 1702 – 1735) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the title of Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. He was also a freemason, which is a member of a fraternal organization.
A Young Scottish Earl
James Lyon was born around the year 1702. His parents were John Lyon, 4th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Lady Elizabeth Stanhope. He was christened on December 24, 1702.
Becoming the Earl
James became the 7th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne in 1728. He took on this important role after his older brother, Charles Lyon, 6th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, passed away. An Earl is a high-ranking noble title in the United Kingdom.
Family Life
On March 6, 1731, James Lyon married Mary Oliphant. She was the daughter of Charles Oliphant. James and Mary did not have any children.
His Later Years
James Lyon passed away on January 4, 1735, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was succeeded as Earl by his younger brother, Thomas Lyon, 8th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
