James Roberts (born 3 March 1993) is an Australian former professional rugby league player. He played as a centre or winger. His last team was the Wests Tigers in the National Rugby League (NRL).

Roberts also played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Penrith Panthers, and Gold Coast Titans. He represented the Indigenous All Stars, City Origin, and New South Wales in the 2018 State of Origin series.

About James Roberts

James Roberts was born in Kempsey, New South Wales, Australia. He is from the Indigenous Australian Bundjalung people. People often called him "Jimmy the Jet" because of his speed.

He started playing junior rugby league for the Ballina Seagulls. Later, he joined the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Roberts played for the Rabbitohs' NYC team from 2010 to 2012. He scored 28 tries in 26 matches. In the 2010 NYC Grand Final, he scored a try for South Sydney.

James Roberts comes from a family of talented rugby league players. His uncle is former player Amos Roberts. His cousins include Tyrone Roberts, Tyronne Roberts-Davis, Albert Kelly, Anthony Mundine, and Greg Inglis.

James Roberts' Early Career

Roberts played in the Holden Cup (Under-20s competition) from 2010 to 2013. He played for both the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Penrith Panthers. During this time, he scored 35 tries and kicked 17 goals.

Starting with South Sydney

In 2011, James Roberts made his NRL debut for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. This was in Round 7 of the 2011 NRL season. He played at fullback against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. In Round 8, he scored his first NRL try against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. He finished the season with 10 matches and 5 tries. He was also named on the wing in the 2011 NYC Team of the Year.

Roberts did not play any NRL games in 2012. He played four games for Souths' feeder club, the North Sydney Bears, in the NSW Cup. He later signed a two-year contract with the Penrith Panthers for 2013.

Playing for the Penrith Panthers

In 2013, Roberts joined the Penrith Panthers. He made his club debut in Round 11 of the 2013 NRL season. In Round 16, he scored his first try for Penrith. In Round 17, he scored three tries in one game against the Gold Coast Titans. This was a fantastic performance.

On 6 October, Roberts also played in the 2013 Holden Cup Grand Final. He scored two tries in the win against the New Zealand Warriors. He won the Jack Gibson Medal for being the best player in that match. For the 2013 NRL season, Roberts played six matches and scored six tries for Penrith.

Time with the Gold Coast Titans

In 2014, James Roberts signed with the Gold Coast Titans. He made his club debut in Round 14 against the Melbourne Storm. He scored a try in that game. He finished his first season with the Titans having scored 5 tries in 12 matches.

In 2015, Roberts was part of the Titans' 2015 NRL Auckland Nines squad. On 3 May, he played for New South Wales City. He played at centre against New South Wales Country.

At the 2015 Dally M Awards, Roberts was named the Centre of the Year. He was the Titans' top try-scorer for the season with 16 tries in 24 matches. On 23 December, he signed a 2-year contract with the Brisbane Broncos.

Career with the Brisbane Broncos

In 2016, Roberts joined the Brisbane Broncos. He was named in the emerging New South Wales Blues squad. On 13 February, he played for the Indigenous All Stars. This was against the World All Stars.

In Round 1 of the 2016 NRL season, Roberts made his Broncos debut. He played at centre against the Parramatta Eels. In Round 4, he scored his first try for the Broncos. He finished the year with 9 tries in 25 matches.

In 2017, Roberts was selected for the Broncos 2017 NRL Auckland Nines squad. In Round 7, he scored three tries in one game against his former club, the Titans. On 27 July 2017, Roberts extended his contract with the Broncos. In Round 26, he played his 100th NRL career match. He scored a try in that game. Roberts was the Broncos' highest try-scorer in the 2017 NRL season with 18 tries in 26 matches.

Playing for New South Wales

In 2018, Roberts was chosen to play for the New South Wales team. This was for the 2018 State of Origin series. On 6 June 2018, Roberts made his State of Origin debut in Game 1. New South Wales won that game against Queensland. Roberts played in all three matches at centre. The Blues won the series 2-1. He finished the 2018 NRL season with 22 matches and 9 tries for the Broncos.

Return to South Sydney and Wests Tigers

On 15 February 2019, Roberts played for the Indigenous All Stars. They won against the New Zealand Maori All Stars.

On 29 May 2019, Roberts left the Brisbane Broncos. He then signed a contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. This meant he was back playing under coach Wayne Bennett. On 7 June 2019, Roberts played for South Sydney against the Newcastle Knights. He scored a try in that game.

In 2020, Roberts suffered a pectoral injury in Round 10. This injury kept him out of play for twelve weeks. On 19 November, Roberts signed a two-year deal with the Wests Tigers.

In 2021, he made his debut for Wests Tigers in Round 1. In Round 12, Roberts scored two tries in a win against St. George Illawarra. He played a total of 11 games for the Wests Tigers in the 2021 NRL season. The club finished 13th and did not make the finals.

In March 2022, Roberts was seen with a teammate in a Newcastle hotel. This caused some discussion, but no rules were broken.
