James Tyson Lane (born April 10, 1835 – died October 18, 1885) was an American lawyer and politician. He was known for his work in law and his service during the American Civil War.

Early Life and Education

James Tyson Lane was born in Clinton, Louisiana, on April 10, 1835. His parents were William Allen and Catharine Lane.

He went to Yale College and graduated in 1855. After college, he studied law at the New Orleans Law School. He became a lawyer in April 1857. Soon after, he started his law practice in Richmond, which is now known as Tallulah, Louisiana, in Madison Parish, Louisiana.

Family Life

On August 17, 1857, James Tyson Lane married Emma F. Lay. She was from Branford, Connecticut. Sadly, Emma died on October 8, 1867, while visiting family in Quincy, Illinois. James and Emma had one son, who survived his father.

Military Service and Political Career

In early 1862, James Tyson Lane joined the Confederate States Army. He became part of the 4th Kentucky Regiment. This regiment was led by Colonel Trabue, who used to be Lane's law partner.

During the Battle of Murfreesboro (also called Stone River) on January 2, 1863, he was serving as a staff officer under General Breckenridge. In this battle, he lost his right leg.

Even after his injury, Lane continued to serve. In 1863, he was elected to the Louisiana State Senate. This meant he helped make laws for the state of Louisiana.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1865, James Tyson Lane went back to being a lawyer in Madison Parish. He was a very important lawyer and citizen in the area until he became sick.

He passed away on October 18, 1885, at his cotton plantation near Tallulah, Louisiana. He was 50 years old and had been sick for three months.
