Jammin' Java is a popular music club and coffee shop located in Vienna, Virginia. It's known for featuring talented local and independent musicians. This cool venue can hold up to 200 people. Many famous artists have played here, including Nick Jonas, Paramore, Bon Iver, and Owl City.

Jammin' Java first opened its doors in 1999. In 2001, three brothers named Daniel, Jonathan, and Luke Brindley bought the club. They made many improvements and still own and run it today. The club has even been named one of the top 100 clubs for ticket sales worldwide by Pollstar. Paste magazine also called it one of the top 40 music clubs in America!

Discovering Jammin' Java's Story

How It Started

Jammin' Java was first imagined by Paul and Theresa Klassen. They wanted to create a place for music, especially Christian music, in Maryland. In 1996, they opened a recording studio called Waters Edge. This studio was a nonprofit and helped Christian artists record their songs.

Their teenage son suggested opening community spots that offered coffee and music. These places would focus on general Christian beliefs, not one specific church. They decided to call these spots "Jammin' Java."

In 1998, the very first Jammin' Java opened in Kent Island, Maryland. It was in an old pool hall. Then, on November 8, 1999, the second Jammin' Java opened in Vienna, Virginia. This location was in a strip mall and used to be a Rite Aid store. It became a coffee shop, a small music venue, a recording studio, and a music store. The store even sold guitars and amplifiers!

At first, the Vienna location mainly featured Contemporary Christian music. The manager, Matt Turner, said it was "faith-based and non-denominational." This meant it welcomed everyone and didn't display Christian symbols. The Klaasens also helped other cities like Indianapolis and Orlando open their own Jammin' Java locations.

New Owners, New Sound

The original Jammin' Java in Kent Island and the Waters Edge studio eventually closed. However, the Jammin' Java in Vienna was struggling but still open. On October 15, 2001, three brothers—Daniel, Jonathan, and Luke Brindley—bought the Vienna club. These brothers were all musicians from New Jersey. They wanted to create a great place where other musicians could perform.

The Brindley brothers immediately started making big changes. They built a brand new stage and put in better lighting and sound systems. They worked hard to make the venue perfect for live music.

The club reopened on October 15, 2001, with a fresh start. The new owners changed the focus from Christian music to a wider variety of music. They also began serving full meals and other drinks. They started booking many more musicians to play on their stage.

At first, they focused on singer-songwriters and local bands. But over time, they expanded to include many different music styles. You can now hear punk, rock, and pop artists at Jammin' Java. The club became more and more popular. It earned awards like being named one of the best music clubs in America by Paste magazine. The Washington Post readers also voted it one of the best local live venues. AOL Cityguide even called it one of the best places to hear live music!

In October 2011, Jammin' Java celebrated its tenth anniversary under the Brindley brothers' ownership. They held special events and concerts all month long. Fans could even buy a special pass to attend all the shows for $100.

What Jammin' Java Offers

Jammin' Java is a busy music venue that hosts live music every day. On average, there's more than one show daily! Between 2001 and 2011, the club held about 7,000 concerts.

During the daytime, Jammin' Java has a special program called Tot Rock. This is a music series designed for families with young children. The club also helps people learn music through its Music School at Jammin' Java.

One of the owners, Daniel Brindley, also runs an artist management company from the club. It's called Go Team! Music Artist Management. He also has a record label, Go Team! Records. Some artists managed by his company include Chelsea Lee, Rocknoceros, and Deep River.
