Jamshid Giunashvili's Life Story
Jamshid Giunashvili's father, Shalva Giunashvili (1908–1981), was an engineer. Shalva was the ninth child of an Orthodox priest. His older brother, Jamshid's uncle, was a well-known doctor. Sadly, his uncle was executed in 1924 during a difficult time in the Soviet Union.
Moving to Iran
Even though Shalva's work was not political, the situation in the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic was tough. Because of this, and because his brother had been executed, Shalva Giunashvili had to leave Georgia. In 1929, he moved to Iran with his whole family. Two years later, in 1931, Jamshid Giunashvili was born in Tehran.
In Iran, Jamshid's father worked as an engineer. He helped build railways across the country. Some of these railways were between Khorramabad and Andimeshk, Arak and Qom, and Semnan and Shahrud. Jamshid himself went to Alborz High School in Tehran. The Giunashvili family lived in Iran until 1947.
Returning to Georgia and Studies
The Giunashvili family returned to Georgia in 1947. Four years later, in 1951, they were sent to Kazakhstan.
In 1956, Jamshid Giunashvili began studying Iranian studies at the State University of Tashkent. In early 1958, he continued his studies at Tbilisi State University and the Georgian National Academy of Sciences. He spent more than fifty years of his life focusing on Iranian studies.
Contributions and Achievements
Jamshid Giunashvili wrote over 200 scientific research papers about Iran. These works were in Georgian, Persian, English, and Russian. One of his big achievements was helping to publish the Georgian national epic, The Knight in the Panther's Skin by Shota Rustaveli, in Persian. This Persian version was published in 1998.
In 2010, Jamshid Giunashvili received a very important literary prize. The president of Iran gave him an Honorable Mention and Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This was for his hard work over ten years.
