Jan Skácel facts for kids
Jan Skácel (born February 7, 1922, in Vnorovy – died November 7, 1989, in Brno) was a famous Czech poet. He came from the Moravian region and is known as one of the best poets who wrote in the Czech language. His poems often showed the beauty of the Czech language, even when people felt afraid because of the communist government in Czechoslovakia. His writings were deeply connected to the traditions and nature of Southern Moravia, where he lived.
Skácel's poems were even mentioned in the book Ignorance by Milan Kundera. He was also the editor of an important literary magazine called Host do domu from 1963 to 1969. In 1989, he won two big international awards: the German Petrarca-Preis and the Slovenian Vilenica prize. A German poet named Sarah Kirsch later said that Jan Skácel was a major influence on her own writing.
