Jan van Roessel (born April 7, 1925 – died June 3, 2011) was a famous Dutch football player. He was known as a strong striker who played for Willem II and the Netherlands national team.

Playing for Clubs

Jan van Roessel was a powerful striker, great at heading the ball. He joined Willem II in Tilburg in 1951 from LONGA. With Willem II, he helped his team win two major championships.

Winning Championships

In 1952, Willem II won the Dutch league title. At that time, football was still played by amateur players. Later, in 1955, they won the first professional Eredivisie championship. Jan van Roessel was a key player in both these victories.

He played very well with his teammates Toon Becx and Piet de Jong. Together, they were a strong attacking team. Some big clubs, like PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands and even Italian clubs like Sampdoria and Torino, were interested in him. However, his coach convinced him to stay in Tilburg.

Jan van Roessel was later named the "Player of the Century" for Willem II. This shows how important he was to the club.

Playing for His Country

Jan van Roessel also played for the Netherlands. He made his first appearance in June 1949 in a friendly match against Finland.

International Matches and Goals

He played a total of 6 matches for his country and scored 5 goals. In 1952, he represented the Netherlands at the 1952 Summer Olympics. During this tournament, he scored a goal against Brazil.

His last game for the national team was in May 1955, in a friendly match against Switzerland.

Personal Life

Jan van Roessel married Louisa van Laarhoven in 1956. He passed away on June 3, 2011, at the age of 86, due to a lung disease.
