Jane Montagu Douglas Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry (born Jane McNeill; 19 December 1929 – 18 April 2011) was a British duchess and a fashion model. She worked for the famous designer Norman Hartnell. Later, she married John Scott, who would become the 9th Duke of Buccleuch and 11th Duke of Queensberry.

Early Life and Modeling

Jane McNeill was born in Shanghai on December 19, 1929. She was the only child of John McNeill and his wife, Amy Maynard. Her father was a barrister (a type of lawyer) in Shanghai. He also worked as the Crown Advocate for the British court there.

When the Second Sino-Japanese War began in 1937, Jane and her mother moved to Argyll in Scotland for safety. They later returned to Shanghai. Jane went to Abbot's Hill School. After school, she started her career as a fashion model. She modeled for Norman Hartnell, a well-known designer. Her father was held by the Japanese during World War II. He returned to England in 1942. After the war, he worked as a lawyer in Hong Kong. Jane often appeared in the social news of Hong Kong newspapers.

Marriage and Public Life

On January 10, 1953, Jane McNeill married Lord Dalkeith in St. Giles's Cathedral in Edinburgh. Their wedding was a big social event. Lord Dalkeith was a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party.

In 1971, Lord Dalkeith had a serious accident while riding a horse. He became paralyzed from the chest down. Jane, Lady Dalkeith at the time, helped him continue his work in the House of Commons. She was also a supporter of the Scottish National Party.

In 1973, her father-in-law, Walter, passed away. This meant Lord Dalkeith became the 9th Duke of Buccleuch. Jane then became known as the Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry.

The Duchess took classes in conservation. She became very involved with the Buccleuch family's art collection. She also served as a director for Buccleuch Estates, which manages the family's lands. In 1979, she wrote a recipe book. It included old family recipes and others found in the Buccleuch cookbooks.

The Duchess became a widow in 2007. She passed away in London on April 18, 2011.
