Richard Walter John Montagu Douglas Scott, born on February 14, 1954, is the 10th Duke of Buccleuch and 12th Duke of Queensberry. He is a Scottish landholder and a peer, which means he holds a special noble title. He is also the Chief of Clan Scott, a historic Scottish family.

He is a direct descendant of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, who was the eldest son of Charles II of England. The Duke was once one of Scotland's largest private landowners. On December 9, 2023, King Charles III appointed him as the Chancellor of the Order of the Thistle, which is a very important Scottish honor.

Early Life and School

Richard Scott was born in 1954. His parents were John Scott, 9th Duke of Buccleuch, and Jane Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch. When he was a baby, Princess Margaret was one of his godparents.

He went to school at St. Mary's School, Melrose, and then to Eton College. From 1967 to 1969, he was a Page of Honour to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. This was a special role where he attended to the Queen Mother at important events.

In 1973, his father became the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry. At that time, Richard started using the title Earl of Dalkeith. Before that, he was known as Lord Eskdaill. He finished his studies at the University of Oxford in 1976.

He received a special award, becoming a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE), for his work with the Millennium Celebrations. He left the commission in 2003.

He was also the president of the National Trust for Scotland from 2003 to 2012. This organization works to protect Scotland's natural and historical places. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE), which means he is recognized for his achievements in science and learning.

In 2007, when his father passed away, Richard inherited the titles of Duke of Buccleuch and Duke of Queensberry.

The Dukes of Buccleuch have a very important art collection. In 2007, a famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci called Madonna of the Yarnwinder was stolen from the collection. It was later found and returned. In 2008, a rare portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth I of England was discovered in the family's collection at Boughton House.

In 2011, he became an Honorary Colonel for a military battalion. He was also appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant and then as Lord Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale. A Lord Lieutenant is the King's personal representative in a county. In 2014, he became the Captain-General of the Royal Company of Archers, which is the King's Bodyguard for Scotland.

The Duke is a trustee of the Royal Collection Trust, which looks after the Royal Family's art and treasures. He is also the President of St Andrew's First Aid, an organization that provides first aid training. In 2019, he stepped down as chairman of the Buccleuch Group, which manages family businesses like land, wind farms, and tourism.

In 2016, the Duke was appointed High Steward of Westminster Abbey. This is an important role at the famous Abbey in London. He was also appointed Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for 2018 and 2019.

He received another high honor, becoming a Knight of the Order of the Thistle (KT), in 2018. In 2023, he became the Chancellor of this Order. He also received the Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 2021 for his work with the Royal Collections Trust.
