Janet Loxley Lewis (born August 17, 1899 – died December 1, 1998) was an American writer. She was known for her novels, poetry, and for writing stories for operas (called libretti).

Janet Lewis was born in Chicago, Illinois. She went to the University of Chicago. There, she was part of a group of writers and artists. This group included her future husband, Yvor Winters. She was also very active in the university's Poetry Club. Later, she taught at Stanford University in California. She also taught at the University of California at Berkeley.

Her Amazing Books

Janet Lewis wrote many interesting books. One of her most famous novels is The Wife of Martin Guerre (1941). This book tells a story about a man who tricks people and another man who acts like a coward.

Her very first novel was The Invasion: A Narrative of Events Concerning the Johnston Family of St. Mary's (1932). She also wrote other prose works. These include The Trial of Soren Qvist (1947) and The Ghost of Monsieur Scarron (1959). She also published a collection of short stories called Good-bye, Son, and Other Stories (1946).

Her Poetry and Other Works

Janet Lewis was also a talented poet. She focused on creating strong pictures with words (imagery). She also paid attention to the rhythm and musical sound of her poems.

Some of her poetry collections include The Indians in the Woods (1922). Later collections were Poems, 1924–1944 (1950) and Poems Old and New, 1918–1978 (1981). She also worked with a composer named Alva Henderson. She wrote three libretti (stories for operas) and several song lyrics for him.

Her Life and Legacy

In 1926, Janet Lewis married Yvor Winters. He was also an American poet and critic. Together, they started a literary magazine called Gyroscope. This magazine was published from 1929 to 1931.

In 1992, Janet Lewis was chosen as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This is a special honor for people who have achieved great things. She passed away at her home in Los Altos, California, in 1998. She was 99 years old.
