Janko Prunk's Life Story
Janko Prunk was born in a small place called Loka pri Zidanem Mostu. This area is in central Slovenia. At the time, it was under German control during World War II.
Early Life and Education
Janko started primary school in his hometown. Later, he moved to a school in nearby Radeče. He then went to a high school in Celje. In 1966, he finished his studies at the University of Ljubljana. He earned degrees in history and sociology.
After university, he joined the army for a year. He continued his studies and earned his master's degree in 1972. In 1976, he completed his PhD. His PhD topic was about the Slovenian Christian Socialist movement. This was a challenging subject to study back then.
His Work as a Historian
Janko Prunk received special scholarships. These allowed him to work and teach in Germany. He was a visiting professor at the University of Freiburg and the University of Cologne.
From 1966 to 1995, he worked at the Institute for Modern History in Ljubljana. He then became a professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana. He taught there until he retired in 2013.
Today, he is a member of important historical groups. These include the Leibniz Institute of European History in Germany. He is also part of the Center for European Integration Studies.

Janko Prunk has also been active in politics. He joined a political group called the Democratic Opposition of Slovenia. This happened when Slovenia was becoming a democracy. He was a member of the Slovenian Democratic Party.
Role in Government
From 1992 to 1993, Prunk served as a minister. He was in charge of issues for Slovenes living outside Slovenia. He also handled matters for minority groups within Slovenia. This was part of the first government led by Janez Drnovšek.
After 1994, he took a break from politics for over ten years. Before the 2004 elections, he supported the Slovenian Democratic Party again. In 2005, he led a special historical group. This group was formed by the governments of Slovenia and Croatia. Its goal was to understand the history between the two countries.
Later Political Views
Between 2004 and 2008, he led the Slovenian Democratic Party's education policy committee. He left this role in 2008. He disagreed with the government's support for private universities.
After leaving the party, he became critical of the Prime Minister at the time, Janez Janša. Prunk felt the party had changed its views. He believed it moved away from the idea of a welfare state. A welfare state is when the government helps its citizens with things like healthcare and education.
Awards and Achievements
Janko Prunk has received several important awards for his work:
- 1999: Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia in science award.
- 2016: Sigmund Zois award for superior achievement. This was for his book Zgodovina Evrope v dobi racionalistične civilizacije 1775-2015. This book is about the history of Europe.
