Jaromír Blažek's Football Journey
Jaromír Blažek started his football career in Brno. He began playing for Slavia Prague, where he had his first games in the league. After two years, where he was mostly a substitute player, he moved to Dynamo České Budějovice. There, he became the main goalkeeper.
Winning the Czech Cup
The 1992–93 season was the last for the Czechoslovak First League. Jaromír then joined Viktoria Žižkov for the first season of the new Gambrinus liga. This was a great choice because he won his first title, the Czech Cup, with them in 1994. He only stayed for one year before moving to FC Bohemians in Prague.
Moving to Bohemians and Slavia
His team, Bohemians, was relegated that year. Jaromír did not want to play in the Second League. So, he was loaned for one year to his first club, Slavia Prague. There, he helped them win the 1995–96 Czech First League. Since Bohemians got promoted back to the top league the same year, he returned to them. He played for Bohemians for three and a half more years.
Success with Sparta Prague
Even though his club was not doing very well, Jaromír caught the eye of the big team, Sparta Prague. He joined them in early 2000 and quickly won two league titles in a row, in 2000 and 2001.
He went on loan to Marila Příbram in 2001 but came back after one year. After returning, he played almost every game for Sparta Prague. This included league matches, cup games, and even Champions League matches. This was a very successful time for Jaromír. He won four more league titles and three national cups with Sparta Prague.
Playing in Germany and Return to Sparta
In 2007, Jaromír decided to play football outside the Czech Republic. He was sold to the German club 1. FC Nürnberg. He became their main goalkeeper. However, he got sick in April, which meant he could not play the end of the season. Nürnberg was relegated that year.
In June, it was announced that Jaromír was returning to Sparta Prague for the next season. On December 16, 2011, Sparta Prague decided to end his contract early. This made him a free agent, meaning he could join any team he wanted.
Setting a New Record
On February 22, 2014, while playing for Jihlava against Znojmo, Jaromír Blažek achieved a new record. He kept his 139th "clean sheet" in a league match. A clean sheet means the goalkeeper does not let the other team score any goals. This set a new record for goalkeepers in the Czech league.
Playing for His Country
Jaromír Blažek played his first game for the Czech national team on March 29, 2000. It was a friendly match against Australia, and the Czech Republic won 3–1.
He was part of the Czech squad for Euro 2000, Euro 2004, and the 2006 World Cup. However, because Petr Čech was usually the first-choice goalkeeper, Jaromír did not play often for his country. The only major tournament he played in was Euro 2004.
