Jarred Jakobi Vanderbilt (born April 3, 1999) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). As a high school star, he was chosen as a McDonald's All-American. Vanderbilt played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats. He was later picked by the Denver Nuggets in the 2018 NBA draft.

Jarred Vanderbilt's Early Life
Jarred Vanderbilt was born in Houston, Texas. His parents are Gwendolyn and Robert Vanderbilt. He has two older brothers, Jamal and Robert. He also has three older sisters, Rean, Jenae, and Tasha. Basketball runs in his family! His father played basketball at Wiley College. His mother played at Xavier of Louisiana. His brother, Jamal, played at Texas-Tyler, and his sister, Jenae, played at UTSA.
Vanderbilt went to Victory Prep Academy in Houston, Texas. In his final year of high school, he was amazing on the court. He averaged 28.5 points, 13.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game. Experts like Scout.com, Rivals.com, and ESPN thought he was one of the best players in the 2017 recruiting class. On December 23, 2016, Vanderbilt decided to play for the Kentucky Wildcats.
College Basketball Journey
Even though Jarred was a top player in high school, he faced some challenges in college. He had two injuries that limited his playing time. He only played 14 games for the Kentucky Wildcats. During those games, he averaged 5.9 points and 7.9 rebounds in about 17 minutes per game. After his freshman year, he decided to enter the 2018 NBA draft.
Playing in the NBA
Denver Nuggets (2018–2020)
On June 21, 2018, the Orlando Magic picked Vanderbilt as the 41st player in the 2018 NBA draft. But he was soon traded to the Denver Nuggets. He officially signed with the Nuggets on July 11, 2018. Jarred played his first NBA game on January 25, 2019. It was a big win for the Nuggets against the Phoenix Suns. He played for four minutes and scored one point. He also grabbed three rebounds, made an assist, and got one steal. Later, in November 2019, Vanderbilt was sent to play for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA G League.
Minnesota Timberwolves (2020–2022)
On February 5, 2020, Vanderbilt was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played his first game for them on December 27, 2020. It was a loss against the Los Angeles Lakers. He played for 15 minutes, scoring two points and grabbing seven rebounds. He also had six assists, three steals, and one block. On January 23, 2021, Vanderbilt had his best game yet. He scored 16 points and got 11 rebounds in a win against the New Orleans Pelicans.
On September 15, 2021, Vanderbilt signed again with the Timberwolves. He became a starter in 67 games during the 2021–22 season. He had his best averages that year: 6.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. On April 12, 2022, he helped the Timberwolves win a play-in game against the Los Angeles Clippers. He grabbed 10 rebounds in that important game.
Utah Jazz (2022–2023)
On July 6, 2022, Jarred Vanderbilt was part of a big trade. He was traded to the Utah Jazz. This trade also included other players like Malik Beasley and Patrick Beverley. The Jazz also received several future draft picks. In return, the Timberwolves got Rudy Gobert.
Los Angeles Lakers (2023–present)
On February 9, 2023, Vanderbilt was traded again. This time, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers in a three-team trade. He played his first game for the Lakers two days later. He scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and made four assists. The Lakers won that game against the Golden State Warriors.
On September 18, 2023, Vanderbilt signed a new contract with the Lakers. It was a four-year deal worth $48 million. This shows how much the Lakers value him! On December 9, 2023, Vanderbilt and the Lakers made history. They won the very first NBA In-Season Tournament. This was a new competition in the NBA.
Playing for Team USA
Jarred Vanderbilt has also played for his country. In 2015, he won a gold medal with the USA U16 National Team. This was at the 2015 FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship. He also played in the 2017 Nike Hoop Summit. He scored 19 points in that game, helping Team USA beat the World Select Team.
Beyond the Court
Jarred Vanderbilt decided to become a vegan in 2020. He first tried it as a one-month challenge.
