Jarrett Allen is an American professional basketball player. He plays as a center for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Jarrett was born on April 21, 1998. He played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns. The Brooklyn Nets picked him 22nd overall in the 2017 NBA draft. In 2021, he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was chosen for his first NBA All-Star Game in 2022.

Early Life and High School Years
Jarrett Allen was born in San Diego, California. He went to Walsh Middle School in Round Rock, Texas. For his first year of high school, he attended Round Rock High School. Then, he moved to St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas. He spent his last three high school years there. During that time, he helped his team win two SPC championships. Jarrett also played in the 2016 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. This game features the best high school basketball players in the country. After high school, he decided to play college basketball at the University of Texas at Austin. Experts rated him as a top player in his class.
College Basketball Career
At the University of Texas, Jarrett Allen played for the Texas Longhorns. As a freshman, he was a strong player. He scored about 13.4 points and grabbed 8.4 rebounds per game. A rebound is when a player gets the ball after a missed shot. His best game was against Kansas. He scored 22 points and had 19 rebounds in that game. After his freshman year, Jarrett decided to enter the 2017 NBA draft. This meant he would leave college early to play professionally.
Professional Basketball Journey
Playing for the Brooklyn Nets (2017–2021)
The Brooklyn Nets chose Jarrett Allen as the 22nd pick in the 2017 NBA draft. He signed his first professional contract on July 20, 2017. When he played his first NBA game on October 20, he was very young. He was 19 years and 182 days old. This made him the second-youngest player ever to play for the Nets. In that first game, he scored nine points. He also grabbed two rebounds and blocked one shot. A block is when a player stops an opponent's shot.
Jarrett became a starter for the Nets on January 25, 2018. He scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds in a win against the Philadelphia 76ers. On February 2, he scored a career-high 20 points against the Los Angeles Lakers. He also had five rebounds and one block. Later, on January 16, 2019, Jarrett had an amazing game. He scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 24 rebounds. This helped the Nets win a close game against the Houston Rockets.
Joining the Cleveland Cavaliers (2021–Present)
On January 14, 2021, Jarrett Allen was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. This was part of a big trade involving four teams. It was the same trade that sent superstar James Harden to the Nets.
After joining the Cavaliers, Jarrett signed a new contract on August 6, 2021. On October 20, 2021, he made history. He became the first player since 1954 to make 10 or more shots without missing in a season opener. In February 2022, Jarrett was chosen for the 2022 NBA All-Star Game. He replaced James Harden, which was interesting because they were part of the same trade.
Jarrett had a fantastic 2021–22 season. He started all 56 games he played. He averaged 16.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. He also had 1.3 blocks and 0.8 steals per game. Jarrett continued to play well for the Cavaliers. On December 28, 2023, he had 24 points and 23 rebounds in a win. The next day, he scored 30 points and had 12 rebounds. On January 22, 2024, he set a team record. He had 12 games in a row where he scored at least 10 points and had at least 10 rebounds. This is called a "double-double." In the 2024 NBA playoffs, he had a playoff career-high 20 rebounds in a game. On July 31, 2024, Jarrett and the Cavaliers agreed to a new contract. He started all 82 games for the Cavaliers in the 2024–25 NBA season. He averaged 13.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.
Personal Life and Family
Jarrett Allen's family has a history in basketball. His father, Leonard Allen, was also a basketball player. He was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1985 NBA draft. Leonard played college basketball at San Diego State and also played in Spain. Jarrett's older brother, Leonard Jr., also played college basketball for Baylor University.
