Jarrett Ryan Culver (born February 20, 1999) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Osceola Magic in the NBA G League. Before turning professional, he played college basketball for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Early Life and Family

Jarrett Culver was born in Dallas, Texas. When he was three years old, his family moved to Lubbock, Texas, where he grew up. His father, Hiawatha Culver Jr., is a pastor. His mother, Regina, works as a director for a local Head Start program.

Jarrett played football and soccer when he was younger. He later decided to focus on basketball during his time at Irons Middle School. He often played basketball in his driveway with his older brothers, Trey and J.J. They also enjoyed playing the video game NBA 2K.

High School Basketball Career

Culver attended Coronado High School in Lubbock. He played basketball there under coach Randy Dean. In his junior year, he scored an average of 20 points per game. He helped his team reach the 6A regional semifinals.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal newspaper named him the Lone Star Varsity Player of the Year. In his senior year, he averaged about 30 points per game. He also led his team in rebounds and assists. Culver hurt his shoulder again at the start of the season. He had first injured it in his junior year. Despite this, he led Coronado to the playoffs and won the Lone Star Varsity Player of the Year award again.

Many college scouts saw Culver as a promising three-star recruit. On September 22, 2016, he decided to play for Texas Tech. He had also received offers from other top college teams. These included Baylor, Texas, and Illinois.

College Basketball Journey

Freshman Year at Texas Tech

Jarrett Culver played his first college game for Texas Tech on November 10, 2017. He scored 2 points in 16 minutes during a 75–50 win against South Alabama. Later that month, he scored a season-high 21 points against Wofford.

In his next game, he scored 18 points and had 7 assists against Savannah State. Because of his strong play, he was named Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week. On December 16, Culver had 8 points and a season-high 6 steals against Rice. He achieved his first double-double on February 26, 2018. He scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds against West Virginia.

As a freshman, Culver averaged 11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. He set a new Texas Tech freshman record for points scored in conference games.

Sophomore Year and Big Achievements

Before his sophomore season, Culver was named an honorable mention for the preseason All-Big 12 team. He was also on the watch list for the 2019 Jerry West Award. With key players leaving, Culver took on a bigger role in his second year.

He started his sophomore season on November 6, 2018. He scored 16 points and had 4 assists in a big win. On November 20, Culver scored 26 points against Nebraska. This earned him the most valuable player (MVP) award at the Hall of Fame Classic tournament. He was also named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy watch list.

On December 15, Culver had an amazing game against Abilene Christian. He scored 30 points and made 12 of his 13 shots. Soon after, he was named Big 12 Player of the Week. On March 9, 2019, he scored a career-high 31 points against Iowa State.

Culver led the Red Raiders to share the Big 12 regular season title. He was named Big 12 Player of the Year. In the 2019 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, Culver played a huge role. He nearly got a triple-double with 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists in the first round. He helped Texas Tech make history by reaching the Final Four for the first time ever. They beat strong teams like Michigan and Gonzaga.

Texas Tech won their Final Four game against Michigan State. They then played in the championship game against Virginia. They lost in overtime. After the season, Culver decided to enter the 2019 NBA draft.

Professional Basketball Career

Minnesota Timberwolves (2019–2021)

The Phoenix Suns picked Jarrett Culver as the 6th overall player in the 2019 NBA draft. However, his draft rights were immediately traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In return, the Suns received Dario Šarić and the 11th pick in the draft. The trade was made official on July 6. Two days later, Culver signed his first professional contract with the Timberwolves.

On October 23, 2019, he made his NBA debut. He came off the bench and scored four points in an overtime win against the Brooklyn Nets. On January 18, 2020, Culver scored a career-high 26 points against the Toronto Raptors.

In the 2020–21 season, Culver's role on the team became smaller than in his first year. On January 3, 2021, he scored a season-high 20 points against the Denver Nuggets. On April 29, the Timberwolves announced that Culver would need surgery on his right ankle. This surgery, performed on May 7, ended his season early.

Memphis Grizzlies (2021–2022)

On August 25, 2021, Culver was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. He was traded along with Juancho Hernangómez, in exchange for Patrick Beverley. In October, the Grizzlies decided not to pick up Culver's contract option for a fourth year.

On April 10, 2022, he scored a season-high 14 points against the Boston Celtics. On April 19, Culver played in his first NBA playoff game. He scored two points and helped the Grizzlies win Game 2 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Grizzlies won that series and moved on to play the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors won the series in six games.

Atlanta Hawks (2022–2023)

On September 12, 2022, Culver signed a two-way contract with the Atlanta Hawks. This type of contract allows a player to play for both an NBA team and its G League affiliate. On January 14, 2023, the Hawks decided to let him go.

Rio Grande Valley Vipers (2023–2024)

On January 26, 2023, Culver was traded to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. This team is part of the NBA G League.

Osceola Magic (2024–present)

On September 11, 2024, Culver signed with the Orlando Magic NBA team. However, he was waived by them on October 19. Eight days later, he joined the Osceola Magic, which is the G League team connected to the Orlando Magic.

Personal Life

Jarrett Culver is a Christian. His father, Hiawatha Culver Jr., is the team chaplain for Texas Tech. He used to lead a prayer before each home basketball game. Jarrett played basketball in high school with his older brother, J.J. J.J. later played for Wayland Baptist University. There are stories that J.J. once scored 100 points in a game.

His oldest brother, Trey Culver, was a very successful athlete at Texas Tech. He was on the track and field team and competed in the high jump. In 2018, Trey achieved one of the best indoor high jump marks in college history.
