Jason Carlton Thompson (born July 21, 1986) is an American basketball player. He used to play professionally and is now an assistant coach. He coaches for the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA G League.

Jason played college basketball as a starting center for the Rider Broncs. He played there from 2004 to 2008. In 2008, the Sacramento Kings picked him in the first round of the 2008 NBA draft. He holds a special record for the Kings. He played the most games for them while they were in Sacramento.

College Basketball Journey

Jason Thompson grew up in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. He was a star player at Lenape High School. In 2004, he helped his high school team win the New Jersey Group IV state title.

After high school, Jason played four seasons for the Rider Broncs men's basketball team. This was from 2004 to 2008. During the 2006–07 season, he was one of only three players in the NCAA to average 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. The other two famous players were Kevin Durant and Nick Fazekas.

In his final year (2007–08), Jason was amazing. He averaged 20.4 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. He also had 2.7 assists, 2.7 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game. His best game was on March 9, 2008. He scored 32 points and grabbed 18 rebounds against Marist College.

Jason led Rider to the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament final. They played against Siena College. Rider lost that game, but Jason still had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Rider finished the season with a great 23–10 record. They got a spot in the first-ever College Basketball Invitational tournament in 2008. Rider lost their first game, but Jason still played well. He ended his college career as the all-time leading rebounder for the Rider Broncs.

Professional Basketball Career

Playing for the Sacramento Kings (2008–2015)

The Sacramento Kings chose Jason as the 12th pick in the 2008 NBA draft. He signed his first contract with them on July 8, 2008. In his first year (2008–09), he played in all 82 games for the Kings. He averaged 11.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

In October 2009, the Kings extended his contract. He then had his best season, averaging 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. The Kings extended his contract again in October 2010. In 2012, he signed a new multi-year deal with the Kings.

Time with the Golden State Warriors (2015–2016)

On July 10, 2015, Jason was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. Later that month, the 76ers traded him to the Golden State Warriors. He played in only 28 games for the Warriors. He was waived by the team in February 2016.

Joining the Toronto Raptors (2016)

On March 1, 2016, Jason signed with the Toronto Raptors. He played in 19 games for them that season. He helped the Raptors reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time ever. This was his first time playing in the post-season.

Playing Overseas (2016–2021)

In August 2016, Jason signed with the Shandong Golden Stars in China. In 2017, he played in The Basketball Tournament for a team of Rider University alumni.

On July 29, 2017, Jason signed with the Turkish team Fenerbahçe. His team made it to the 2018 EuroLeague Final Four. They lost in the final game. He averaged 5 points and 3.9 rebounds in 36 EuroLeague games. He left Fenerbahçe in July 2018.

On August 11, 2018, Jason signed with the Sichuan Blue Whales in China. On February 1, 2020, he joined Casademont Zaragoza in Spain. He re-signed with them in August. In February 2021, he signed with the Shanghai Sharks in China. Then, on April 4, 2021, he signed with the Guangdong Southern Tigers.

In January 2022, Jason joined the Wisconsin Herd.

Coaching Career

On October 3, 2022, Jason Thompson announced he was retiring from playing basketball. He then became an assistant coach for his old college team, the Rider Broncs.

On October 27, 2024, Jason became an assistant coach for the Sioux Falls Skyforce. This team is part of the NBA G League.

Personal Life

Jason has a younger brother named Ryan. Ryan also played college basketball for Rider University. He then went on to play professionally in Europe, just like Jason.
