Jaswant Singh Kanwal (born June 27, 1919 – died February 1, 2020) was a famous Indian writer. He wrote novels, short stories, and essays in the Punjabi language. He was born in a village called Dhudike in Moga District, Punjab, India.
When he was a young teenager, he left school and traveled to Malaya. It was there that he first became interested in reading and writing. After a few years, he returned to his home village of Dhudike and lived there for the rest of his life. In 2007, he received the Punjabi Sahit Shiromani Award, which is a very important honor for Punjabi writers.
His Books and Stories
Jaswant Singh Kanwal wrote many books. His novels often showed what life was like in the villages of Punjab. He wrote about the everyday lives of people in the countryside.
His stories often asked questions about old traditions and beliefs in society. He cared a lot about fairness and equal rights for everyone. Many of his popular novels supported ideas like social equality and gender equality. This means he believed everyone should be treated fairly, no matter their background or gender. He also wrote strong opinions about important issues in his newspaper essays. Later in his life, he strongly supported the idea of more independence for his home region, Punjab.
Lahoo Di Lo - A Special Novel
One of his most famous novels is Lahoo Di Lo, which means Dawn of the Blood. This book tells a story about a challenging time in Punjab's history. It was quite controversial during a difficult period in the 1970s when the government had special powers. Because of this, no publishers in India wanted to print it.
So, Jaswant Singh Kanwal had his book published in Singapore. Copies of the novel were then secretly brought into India. Only after that difficult time ended was the book finally published in Punjab. This important book has even been translated into English so more people can read it.
