Javed Omar's Cricket Career
Javed Omar was known for his strong batting skills. He was especially good at staying on the field for a long time. This made him a reliable opening batsman for Bangladesh.
Amazing Test Debut
Javed made his Test debut in April 2001. In this very first match, he did something amazing. He scored 85 runs and was the only batsman from his team to stay "not out" through the entire innings. This is called "carrying his bat." He was only the third player ever to do this on their Test debut!
He also became the second player in cricket history to carry his bat through an entire innings in both Test and One Day International matches. Plus, he was one of only 22 cricketers in Test history to score half-centuries (50 runs or more) in both innings of his debut match.
First Test Century
On August 28, 2003, Javed Omar scored his first ever Test century (100 runs). This big achievement happened in a match against Pakistan.
A Rare "King Pair"
In May 2007, during a Test match against India, Javed had a very unusual moment. He got out on the very first ball of both innings. This rare event is known as a "king pair." It means a batsman gets out for zero runs on the first ball they face in both innings of a two-innings match.
Javed Omar's Early Years in Cricket
Javed Omar started playing cricket at a young age. He showed great promise even as a teenager.
Playing for Bangladesh U-19
In 1989, when he was still quite young, Javed traveled to England with the Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team. Later that year, he played in the Asian Under-19 cup in Afghanistan. He scored 55 runs in a match against Pakistan, showing his talent early on.
Joining the National Team
It took a few years for Javed to move from the youth team to the senior national team. He finally got his chance in the 1994–95 season. This delay was partly because Bangladesh mostly played One-Day Cricket during that time. Javed's batting style was more suited for the longer Test matches.
He was also part of the team that won the ICC Trophy in 1997. This was a very important tournament for Bangladesh cricket. However, Javed mostly played as a reserve player during this tournament. The coach, Gordon Greenidge, decided to use a different player, Naimur Rahman, as an opener instead.
