Javed Omar's Cricket Journey
Early Days and Debut
Javed Omar started playing cricket at a young age. When he was still a teenager, he traveled to England in 1989 with the Bangladesh Under-19 team. Later that year, he played in the Asian Under-19 cup in Afghanistan. He scored 55 runs in a match against Pakistan.
It took some time for him to join the main national team. He finally got his chance in the 1994–95 season. This was partly because Bangladesh mostly played One-Day Cricket back then. Javed's batting style was better suited for longer games.
International Career Highlights
Javed Omar made his Test debut in April 2001. In this very first Test match, he achieved something special. He scored 85 runs and stayed "not out" through the entire innings. This means he was the only batsman from his team who didn't get out. He was only the third player ever to do this on their Test debut! He is also one of only two players in history to "carry the bat" in both Test and ODI cricket.
He was also one of just 22 cricketers in Test history to score half-centuries (50 runs or more) in both innings of a Test match on his debut. Javed was known for being able to stay at the batting crease for a long time. This helped his team by not losing wickets quickly.
On August 28, 2003, Javed scored his first ever Test century (100 runs) against Pakistan. This was a big moment in his career.
A Rare Cricket Moment
In May 2007, during a Test match between Bangladesh and India, Javed Omar had a very unusual experience. He got out on the very first ball of both innings of the match. This rare event in cricket is called a "king pair." The bowler who got him out both times was Zaheer Khan.
ICC Trophy Win
Javed was part of the Bangladesh team that won the ICC Trophy in 1997. This was a very important tournament for Bangladesh cricket. Even though he was mostly a reserve player during the tournament, he was still a valuable member of the winning squad.
