Javier Arias Stella (born August 2, 1924 – died February 25, 2020) was a very important person from Peru. He was a doctor who studied diseases, a politician, and a diplomat. He also taught at universities.

Javier Arias Stella served as the Minister of Public Health for Peru twice. He was also the Minister of Foreign Relations. Both of these jobs were under Peruvian president Fernando Belaúnde Terry. Later, he became the President of the United Nations Security Council.

He is famous in the medical world for discovering something called the Arias-Stella reaction.

His Education Journey

Javier Arias Stella started his university studies in Peru. From 1942 to 1944, he studied science at the National University of San Marcos. Then, from 1945 to 1951, he studied medicine at the same university.

He earned his first degree in 1951. Later, in 1959, he earned his doctorate degree from the medical school.

Amazing Medical Discoveries

The Arias-Stella Reaction

Javier Arias Stella made an important discovery. Doctors used to think a certain change in the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) was a type of cancer. But Arias Stella found that it was actually a normal reaction. This reaction happens because of hormones from the placenta during pregnancy.

This reaction can also be seen in the cervix, which is part of the uterus.

How Altitude Affects the Body

Later in his life, Arias Stella studied how living at high altitudes affects people's bodies. He focused on men living in the Andes mountains. For a long time, doctors wondered why many men in the Andes had a condition called pulmonary hypertension. This means they had high blood pressure in the arteries of their lungs.

Arias Stella's research showed the main reason for this. It was because of "hypoxia-induced thickening of the pulmonary arteriolar walls." This means that the low oxygen levels at high altitudes made the walls of small lung arteries thicker. This thickening caused the high blood pressure. He found that this was different from other known cases of lung hypertension.

His Career Journey

Teaching and Founding Universities

Arias Stella started teaching pathology in 1949 at the same university where he studied. Over time, he became a senior teacher in clinical pathology. This is the study of diseases using lab tests.

In 1961, he helped start a new university called the Cayetano Heredia University. He began there as a professor of pathology. By 1969, he was the main professor, and by 1975, he led the pathology department.

He also became a consulting professor for other universities. These included the National University of Caracas in 1974 and the Central University of Venezuela in 1975. He worked in many hospitals in South America and the United States. He also visited many universities in the United States as a guest professor.

Many medical groups asked him to join them. These included the American Association of Pathologists. He also helped start several important medical societies. These were the International Society of Gynecological Pathology, the Latin American Society of Pathology, and the Peruvian Society of Pathology.

Serving His Country: Politics

Javier Arias Stella served as Peru's Minister of Public Health from 1963 to 1965 and again from 1967 to 1968. He became the Minister of Foreign Relations for Peru from 1980 to 1983. He got this job because he was involved with President Fernando Belaúnde Terry's government.

He was the foreign minister during the Paquisha War in 1981. This was a conflict with Ecuador. During early fights over a military outpost, he told newspapers that Peru would take back any land that Ecuadorian forces had entered.

From 1983 to 1985, Arias Stella was Peru's main representative to the United Nations. In 1984 and 1985, he served as the President of the United Nations Security Council. This is a very important role in global peace and security.
