Jay Inslee, who is the Governor of Washington State, decided to run for president on March 1, 2019. He wanted to become the next president in the 2020 United States presidential election. Inslee ran as a member of the Democratic Party. He was the first governor to join the race for the Democratic nomination.

A main goal of Inslee's campaign was to focus on climate change and other environmental issues. He wanted to protect our planet.

Inslee was the first politician from Washington State to run for president since Senator Henry M. Jackson in 1976. In 2018, Inslee was the leader of the Democratic Governors Association. He also helped lead the United States Climate Alliance, which works on climate solutions.

Governor Inslee announced his plan to run for president at a warehouse in Seattle. This warehouse belonged to a company that makes solar panels.

Inslee stopped his campaign on August 21, 2019. He explained that his support in public opinion polls was not high enough.
