Jay Jones, born on February 25, 1974, is a former American football player. He was a wide receiver for six seasons. He played for the Albany/Indiana Firebirds in the Arena Football League (AFL). Before playing professionally, he played college football at James Madison University.

Early Life and High School

Jay Jones was born on February 25, 1974. He grew up in Richmond, Virginia. For high school, he went to George Wythe High School.

College Football Career

Jones played college football for the James Madison Dukes. He was a key player from 1993 to 1996. During his time there, he caught the ball 151 times. He gained 1,862 receiving yards and scored 14 touchdowns. He also returned kickoffs for 819 yards. Overall, he gained 2,760 all-purpose yards.

In 1996, Jones set a special record. He returned kickoffs for 268 yards in one game. This was against the Richmond Spiders. He even returned one kickoff for a touchdown. Another kickoff return was for 92 yards. This was a record for NCAA Division I-AA at the time.

Professional Football Career

After college, Jay Jones signed with the New York Jets in 1997. This was after the 1997 NFL draft. However, he decided to leave the team before playing in any regular games.

Jones then joined the Arena Football League (AFL). He played for the Albany/Indiana Firebirds from 1998 to 2003. He played in 78 games for the team. In the AFL, players often played both offense and defense. This was called "ironman rules." Jones played as both a wide receiver and a defensive back.

As a receiver, he caught 197 passes for 2,165 yards. He scored 36 touchdowns. On defense, he made 126 solo tackles and helped with 57 others. He also caught six Interceptions and broke up 28 passes. He forced one fumble and recovered three fumbles. He also returned 125 kickoffs for 2,346 yards and two touchdowns. In 2001, he was recognized as a second-team All-Arena player. This means he was one of the best players in the league.

Life After Football

In January 2018, Jay Jones started a new role. He became the dean of students. This was at Logansport Junior High School in Logansport, Indiana.
