Jean-Charles della Faille was a smart man from a long time ago. He was born in Antwerp on March 1, 1597. He became a Jesuit priest, which is a special kind of Catholic priest. He was also a very good mathematician. He died in Barcelona on November 4, 1652, when he was 55 years old.

About Jean-Charles della Faille

Jean-Charles della Faille was born in Antwerp. At that time, Antwerp was part of the Spanish Empire. He went to a school run by the Jesuits. This school was started by a man named François d'Aguilon.

In 1613, Jean-Charles joined the Jesuit order. This meant he wanted to become a Jesuit priest. He then studied at a Jesuit college in Mechelen for two years. After that, he came back to Antwerp.

He was one of the best math students of Grégoire de Saint-Vincent. He even became his student. In 1620, he moved to Dole. Dole was also part of the Spanish Empire. There, he taught math and studied theology. Theology is the study of religious beliefs. He became a priest on April 10, 1621.

Teaching and Advising the King

From 1626 to 1628, Jean-Charles taught math. He taught at a Jesuit school in Louvain. After that, he moved to Madrid. He worked at the Imperial College.

In Madrid, he gave advice to Philip IV. Philip IV was the king of Spain. Jean-Charles helped the king with military questions. He was especially good at advising on fortifications. Fortifications are strong buildings or walls built to protect a place. He also continued to teach math there.

His Famous Book

Jean-Charles della Faille wrote a very famous book. It was called Theoremata de centro gravitatis partium circuli et ellipsis. This book came out in 1632. In this book, he figured out something new. He was the first person to find the centre of gravity of a sector of a circle. A sector of a circle is like a slice of pizza.

In 1629, a famous painter named Anthony van Dyck painted Jean-Charles's picture. Jean-Charles's family asked for the painting. The picture shows him in his Jesuit clothes. It also shows some of his math tools. These tools included a compass, a t-square, and a globe.


Jean-Charles della Faille passed away in Barcelona. He was 55 years old when he died.
