Jean Sorel, whose full name is Jean Bernard Antoine de Chieusses de Combaud de Roquebrune, was born on September 25, 1934. He is a famous French actor. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was a very popular leading actor in European movies. Many people thought he looked and acted a bit like another well-known actor, Alain Delon.

Early Life and Family

Jean Sorel was born in Marseille, France. His family had a long history, going back to the House of Capet. His father, Guy de Combaud de Roquebrune, worked as a newspaper publisher. He was also part of the French Resistance, a group that fought against the occupation of France during World War II. Sadly, his father was killed during the war. Jean Sorel's uncle was François de Menthon.

Before becoming an actor, Jean Sorel thought about becoming a diplomat. He studied international relations at the École normale supérieure. From 1956 to 1957, he worked as a clerk in an embassy in French Algeria.

Acting Career Highlights

Jean Sorel started his acting career in 1957 with the film I Spit on Your Graves. After acting in a few French movies, he became well-known in Italian cinema in 1960. He starred in films like Sweet Deceptions and From a Roman Balcony.

Over the next twenty years, Sorel appeared in many important films. These included A View from the Bridge (1962), The Four Days of Naples (1962), and Belle de jour (1967). He worked with famous directors such as Luis Buñuel and Luchino Visconti. He often played romantic main characters in his early films.

In the late 1960s, Jean Sorel started acting in a type of Italian thriller film called giallo. These movies made him popular with fans of horror films around the world. He starred in films like One on Top of the Other, A Lizard in a Woman's Skin, and Short Night of Glass Dolls.

In 1973, Sorel played Jean Bastien-Thiry, a real-life leader, in the thriller movie The Day of the Jackal. Since 1980, he has mostly worked in television shows. In 2016, he appeared in the film The Origin of Violence.

Awards and Recognition

In 2011, Jean Sorel was given a special honor. He was made a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters. This award recognizes people who have contributed a lot to the arts and literature in France.
