Amadou Jean Tigana (born 23 June 1955) is a famous French former football player and manager. He was a central midfielder, known as one of the best in the world during the 1980s. Jean Tigana played his whole career in France. He also played 52 games for the French national team and scored one goal. After he stopped playing, he became a football manager for teams in France, England, Turkey, and China.

Jean Tigana's Amazing Football Journey

Early Days and Club Success

Jean Tigana started his professional football journey at Toulon. It's interesting because he was discovered a bit later in life. Before becoming a full-time player, he worked part-time in a spaghetti factory and as a postman!

In 1978, he moved to Lyon. Then, he made a big move to Bordeaux in 1981. He played as a midfielder for Bordeaux for eight years. During this time, he helped his team win three league titles and three French Cups. They also came very close to winning big European competitions. They reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1985 and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1987.

In 1989, Tigana joined Marseille. He finished his playing career there after the 1990–91 season. With Marseille, he won two league titles in a row. He also played in the European Cup final in 1991. However, his team lost to Red Star Belgrade in a penalty shootout after the game ended 0–0.

Playing for France: The Magic Square

Jean Tigana was born in Bamako, which was then French Sudan (now Mali). His father was Malian, and his mother was French. He chose to play for France.

As an international player, Tigana was part of a famous midfield group. This group included Michel Platini, Luis Fernandez, and Alain Giresse. They were known as "the Magic Square" (le Carré Magique). Many people consider them one of the best midfield teams ever!

Tigana helped the French national team win the UEFA Euro 1984 tournament. They won it on their home soil, beating Spain in the final. His only goal for France came against Hungary in the 1986 FIFA World Cup finals. In that World Cup, France finished in third place.

How Tigana Played the Game

Jean Tigana was a world-class box-to-box midfielder. This means he was great at both defending and attacking. He usually played in the middle of the field. People admired him for his amazing movement, great teamwork, speed, and endless energy.

Even though Tigana was mostly responsible for helping his team defend, he also loved to go forward. He would create chances for his teammates to score goals. His hard work and wide range of passes, both short and long, made him an excellent player for sharing the ball. He also had great control of the ball and a simple but effective dribbling style. These skills made him a truly top-level midfielder. He was also known for his ability to see and make passes that could break through the opponent's defense.

From Player to Coach: Tigana's Managerial Roles

After his playing career, Jean Tigana became a manager. His first coaching job was back at Lyon, from 1993 to 1995. After that, he moved to Monaco in 1995, taking over from Arsene Wenger. He stayed there until 1999. Under his coaching, Monaco became French league champions in 1997. They also reached the Champions League semi-finals a year later, even beating Manchester United in the quarter-finals!

In April 2000, he became the manager of the English club Fulham. In his first full season, he helped them get promoted from Division One to the FA Premier League as champions. In their first season in the top league in over 30 years, Fulham finished 13th. They also qualified for the UEFA Cup through another competition called the Intertoto Cup. Tigana was let go from Fulham in April 2003. Later, there was a legal disagreement between Tigana and Fulham, but the charges against him were dropped. Tigana then sued Fulham for unfair dismissal and won, receiving a payment of over £2 million.

In October 2005, after a break from coaching, Tigana signed a contract with the Turkish team Beşiktaş. In that same season, Beşiktaş won the Turkish Cup, which they hadn't won in eight years!

Right after winning the Turkish Cup in 2007, Tigana announced he would leave Beşiktaş at the end of the season. He left the club with two games still to play, after agreeing to end his contract early.

On 25 May 2010, Tigana returned to coaching in Ligue 1 with Bordeaux, replacing Laurent Blanc. However, on 7 May 2011, after a big loss to Sochaux (0–4) and some fans being aggressive towards his daughter at the stadium, he announced he would leave Bordeaux.

On 18 December 2011, it was announced that Tigana would coach Shanghai Shenhua in China for the 2012 season. But on 15 April 2012, Tigana resigned from Shanghai Shenhua. This happened after the team had a series of poor results, leaving them near the bottom of their league.
