Jean Tigana's Playing Career
Starting Out in Football
Jean Tigana began his professional football journey at Toulon. It's interesting because he was discovered a bit later than most players. At the time, he was working part-time in a spaghetti factory and as a postman.
Success with Bordeaux
In 1978, Tigana moved to Lyon. Then, in a big transfer deal, he joined Bordeaux. He played as a midfielder for Bordeaux for eight years. During this time, he helped the team win three league titles and three French Cups. They also came close to winning European trophies, reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup and Cup Winners' Cup in 1985 and 1987.
Finishing Strong at Marseille
In 1989, Tigana moved to Marseille. He finished his playing career there after the 1990–91 season. With Marseille, he won two league titles in a row. He also reached the European Cup final in his last season. However, his team lost to Red Star Belgrade in a penalty shootout after the game ended in a 0–0 draw.
Jean Tigana's International Career
Representing France
Jean Tigana was born in Bamako, which was then French Sudan (now Mali). His father was Malian and his mother was French. He chose to play for the French national team.
The "Magic Square" Midfield
As an international player, Tigana was part of a famous midfield group. This group included Michel Platini, Luis Fernandez, and Alain Giresse. They were known as "the Magic Square" (le Carré Magique). Many people consider them one of the greatest midfield teams ever.
European Championship Victory
Tigana was a key player when France won the UEFA Euro 1984 tournament. This big win happened on their home soil, where they beat Spain in the final. Tigana scored his only goal for France in the 1986 FIFA World Cup finals against Hungary. France finished third in that World Cup.
Jean Tigana's Playing Style
A Dynamic Midfielder
Jean Tigana was known as a world-class box-to-box midfielder. This means he played all over the field, from defense to attack. He usually played in the center of the midfield. He was famous for his great movement, excellent teamwork, speed, and amazing stamina. He could run tirelessly throughout the game.
Defensive and Attacking Skills
Even though Tigana was mainly responsible for helping his team defend, he also often moved forward. He would create chances for his teammates to score goals. His strong work ethic and wide range of passes, both short and long, made him an excellent player for distributing the ball. He also had great control of the ball and a simple but effective dribbling style. These skills made him a truly world-class midfielder. He was also known for his ability to spot and make passes that could break through the opponent's defense.
Jean Tigana's Managerial Career
Early Coaching Roles
After his playing career, Tigana became a manager. His first coaching job was back at Lyon, where he coached from 1993 to 1995. After that, he moved to Monaco in 1995, taking over from Arsene Wenger. He stayed at Monaco until 1999. During his time there, Monaco won the French league championship in 1997. They also reached the Champions League semi-finals a year later, even beating Manchester United in the quarter-finals.
Managing Fulham in England
In April 2000, Tigana became the manager of the English club Fulham. In his first full season, he helped them get promoted from Division One to the FA Premier League as champions. Fulham finished 13th in their first top-flight season in over 30 years. They also qualified for the UEFA Cup through the Intertoto Cup. Tigana left Fulham in April 2003. Later, he won a significant payment from the club for unfair dismissal.
Coaching in Turkey and China
In October 2005, after a break from coaching, Tigana signed a contract with the Turkish team Beşiktaş. In that same season, Beşiktaş won the Turkish Cup, which was their first cup win in eight years. Tigana announced he would leave Beşiktaş at the end of the 2007 season, right after winning another Turkish Cup. He left the club with two games remaining.
On May 25, 2010, Tigana returned to Ligue 1 to coach Bordeaux. He left Bordeaux on May 7, 2011, after a tough loss and a difficult incident with fans. On December 18, 2011, it was announced that Tigana would coach Shanghai Shenhua in China for the 2012 season. However, he resigned on April 15, 2012, after a period of poor results for the team.
