Jeanne Birdsall (born in 1951) is an American writer and photographer. She is famous for her exciting children's books. Her most well-known works are the five books about the Penderwick family.
The first book in this series, The Penderwicks, won a big award in 2005. It received the National Book Award for Young People's Literature.
About Jeanne Birdsall
Jeanne Birdsall was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up in the suburbs nearby. She has one older sister.
When she was ten years old, Jeanne decided she wanted to be a writer. But she didn't start writing books until she was 41! Before becoming a writer, she worked as a photographer. Her photos have been shown in art galleries around the world.
Her Books for Young Readers
Jeanne Birdsall's first book came out when she was 54 years old. It was called The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy. This book introduced readers to the Penderwick sisters. It also won the 2005 National Book Award.
She then wrote several more books about the Penderwick family:
- The Penderwicks on Gardam Street (published in 2008)
- The Penderwicks at Point Mouette (published in 2011)
- The Penderwicks in Spring (published in 2015)
- The Penderwicks at Last (the final book, published in 2018)
Jeanne Birdsall has also written picture books for younger children. Her first picture book was Flora's Very Windy Day, which came out in 2010. It was illustrated by Matt Phelan. Another picture book, Lucky and Squash, was published in 2012.
