Jeff Johnson, born on November 11, 1966, is an American politician. He has served in different government roles in Minnesota. He is a member of the Republican Party.
Johnson started his political career in the early 2000s. He has worked at both the state and local levels of government.
Early Political Career
Jeff Johnson was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2000. He served there from 2001 until 2007. The Minnesota House of Representatives is a group of people who help make laws for the state.
In 2006, he decided to run for a different job. He tried to become the state attorney general. This person is the chief lawyer for the state. Johnson did not win this election.
Current Role and Party Work
Today, Jeff Johnson is a commissioner for Hennepin County. This county is in Minnesota and includes the city of Minneapolis. As a commissioner, he helps manage the local government for the 7th district.
In April 2011, Johnson was chosen for another important role. He became the Republican National Committeeman from Minnesota. This means he represents the Republican Party from Minnesota at a national level.
Running for Governor
On May 10, 2017, Jeff Johnson announced he would run for Governor of Minnesota. The governor is the leader of the state government. He wanted to lead Minnesota.
In August 2018, Johnson won a special election called a primary. He defeated former Governor Tim Pawlenty in this race. This win made him the Republican candidate for governor.
Johnson then ran against Democrat Tim Walz in the main election. This election happened in November 2018. Jeff Johnson did not win the general election that year.
