History of Jefferson
Jefferson became an official town on February 24, 1807. It was named after Thomas Jefferson, who was the president at that time. Before this, it was known as Ballstown Plantation.
Over the years, Jefferson's borders changed a bit. It gave some land to nearby towns like Alna and Newcastle. It also took in land from an area called Patricktown, which later became the town of Somerville.
In the early days, people in Jefferson worked in industries like mining and making bricks. There were old granite quarries and clay banks where bricks were produced.

Jefferson is located in Maine and covers a total area of about 58.58 square miles (151.72 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 52.57 square miles (136.16 square kilometers). The rest, about 6.01 square miles (15.57 square kilometers), is water.
The town sits on the Great Bay of Damariscotta Lake. This lake is a big part of the town's natural beauty. Damariscotta Lake State Park is also in Jefferson. This park is about 17 acres (6.9 hectares) and offers a place for people to enjoy nature.
