Jefferson City is a small community in Jefferson County, Montana, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's also a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means the U.S. Census Bureau defines it for gathering population data. In 2020, about 597 people lived there. Jefferson City is part of the larger Helena area.
This community started as a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Fort Benton and Virginia City. It got its name when Jefferson County was created on February 2, 1865.
If you visit in the summer, you can explore the Tizer Botanic Gardens & Arboretum. It's a beautiful place with over 100 kinds of roses and 150 types of clematis flowers.
Geography
Jefferson City is located in the northern part of Jefferson County. It sits in a valley near Prickly Pear Creek. To the north, it shares a border with Clancy.
Interstate 15 runs right through the community. You can get on or off the highway at Exit 176. If you drive north on I-15, you'll reach Helena in about 18 miles. Driving south for about 12 miles will take you to Boulder, which is the main town for Jefferson County.
The total area of Jefferson City is about 60.1 square kilometers (about 23.2 square miles). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water.
Climate
Jefferson City experiences a climate with warm summers and cold winters. The weather can change quite a bit throughout the year.
