Jeffrey John Spalding (born November 5, 1951 – died October 14, 2019) was a very talented Canadian artist. He was born in Scotland. Jeffrey Spalding was also a curator, writer, and teacher. He helped many people learn about art.
Jeffrey Spalding's Amazing Career
Jeffrey Spalding studied art at several universities. He earned degrees from the University of Guelph, Ohio State University, and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
For over 40 years, Jeffrey Spalding taught art to students. He also worked in many art museums. He was a curator and director at places like the University of Lethbridge and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. A curator is someone who chooses and organizes artworks for exhibitions. A director leads the museum.
From 1999 to 2002, he was the director of the Appleton Museum of Art in Florida. He also led the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts from 2007 to 2009. This is a group that supports Canadian artists. During those same years, he was the President and CEO of the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. Later, from 2015 to 2017, he was the Chief Curator at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Besides his work in museums and teaching, Jeffrey Spalding was a successful painter. He also made prints. His artworks are in many important collections. You can find his art in places like the National Gallery of Canada and the Vancouver Art Gallery. His art is also in Canadian Embassies in other countries.
In 2007, Jeffrey Spalding received a special honor. He was named a Member of the Order of Canada. This award recognizes people who have made a big difference to Canada.
In 2018 and 2019, he lived in China for a while. There, he worked with other artists. He also helped put together art shows featuring Chinese artists.
Jeffrey Spalding passed away in 2019 at the age of 67.
