Jemima Grey (born 1675, died 1728) was an important lady in English history. She was also known as Jemima Crew before she married. Jemima was the first wife of Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Kent. He was a very important nobleman.

Her Early Life

Jemima was the daughter of Thomas Crew, 2nd Baron Crew. Her mother was Anne Armine. Anne was the daughter of Sir William Airmine, 2nd Baronet.

When Jemima got married, she took a special painting with her. This painting showed her and her two sisters, Armine and Elizabeth, when they were children. It went to her new home at Wrest Park. In 2017, the painting was fixed up and put back in the house by English Heritage.

Marriage and Family

Jemima married Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Kent in 1694. He later became a duke, which is a very high rank. Together, they had at least six children.

Jemima's Titles

As her husband received more important titles, Jemima's own titles also changed.

  • In 1702, she became the Countess of Kent and Baroness Lucas of Crudwell.
  • In 1706, she became the Marchioness of Kent, Countess of Harold, and Viscountess Goderich.
  • Finally, in 1710, she became the Duchess of Kent. This was her highest title.

Wrest Park Gardens

The beautiful gardens at Wrest Park were first designed by her husband, the Duke of Kent. Later, their granddaughter, Jemima Yorke, 2nd Marchioness Grey, made the gardens even bigger and changed their design.

Her Burial Place

Jemima Grey, the Duchess of Kent, passed away on July 2, 1728. She was buried in the Grey family mausoleum. This special burial place is located at St John the Baptist Church in Flitton.

After Jemima's death, her husband, the Duke, married again. His second wife was Sophia Bentinck, and they had more children.
