The Duchess of Kent is a special title given to the wife of the Duke of Kent. It's like a "courtesy title," which means it's used out of tradition and respect. There have been four different titles connected to Kent since the 1700s. The current Duchess is Katharine. She is married to Prince Edward. Prince Edward became the Duke of Kent in 1942. This happened when his father, Prince George, passed away. Prince George was the fourth son of George V, a former King of the United Kingdom.

A Look Back at the Duchesses of Kent

The First Duchesses (1710-1740)

The first Duke of Kent was Henry Grey, 12th Earl of Kent. He was given the title of Duke by Queen Anne in 1710. His wife, Jemima Crew, became the first Duchess of Kent. She passed away in 1728. Henry Grey married again to Sophia Bentinck. She also became Duchess of Kent. Sadly, Henry Grey had no sons who lived long enough to inherit his titles. So, when he passed away, the title of Duke of Kent ended for a while.

Duchess of Kent and Strathearn (1818-1820)

Later, in 1799, another royal was given a Kent title. This was Prince Edward Augustus, a son of George III. He became the Duke of Kent and Strathearn. In 1818, he married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She became the Duchess of Kent and Strathearn. They had one daughter, who later became the famous Queen Victoria. Prince Edward passed away in 1820, and his duchess passed away in 1861.

Countess of Kent (1874-1900)

The next title connected to Kent was "Countess of Kent." This title was given to Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. She married Prince Alfred Ernest Albert in 1874. Prince Alfred was a son of Queen Victoria. They were more often known as the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. They had five children. The Prince passed away in 1900, and the Grand Duchess passed away in 1920.

Duchesses of Kent (1934-Present)

In 1934, Prince George Edward Alexander Edmund was made Duke of Kent. This was by his father, George V. Prince George married Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. She became the Duchess of Kent. Princess Marina was a cousin of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who later married Queen Elizabeth II.

Prince George passed away in 1942. His son, Prince Edward, was only six years old. Prince Edward then became the new Duke of Kent. Princess Marina continued to be called "The Duchess of Kent." After Prince Edward married, she was known as "Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent" until she passed away in 1968.

The current Duchess of Kent is Katharine Worsley. She married Prince Edward in 1961. She has been the Duchess of Kent ever since.

Future Duchesses

Prince Edward and Katharine have an eldest son named George Windsor. He is currently known as the Earl of St Andrews. His wife is Sylvana Tomaselli. When George becomes the Duke of Kent, Sylvana would become the Duchess of Kent.

George and Sylvana also have a son named Edward. He was born in 1988 and is currently unmarried.
