Edward Edmund Maximilian George Windsor, known as Eddy Downpatrick, was born on December 2, 1988. He is a British travel expert and fashion designer. Eddy is also a member of the British royal family.
He holds the title of Baron Downpatrick. This is a special title used by courtesy, meaning it's a polite way to refer to him. He is second in line to become the Duke of Kent after his father. Eddy is a distant cousin of King Charles III. He is the highest-ranking member of the House of Windsor who cannot become king or queen because he is Roman Catholic.
Early Life and Education
Eddy Downpatrick was born in London on December 2, 1988. He spent his childhood growing up in Cambridge, England. He is the oldest child of George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews. His father is the son of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent.
Eddy's mother is Sylvana, Countess of St Andrews. She is a historian who was born in Canada. Diana, Princess of Wales, was Eddy's godmother. Sadly, she passed away before he could get to know her well.
Eddy went to Eton College for his schooling. After that, he studied at Keble College, Oxford. He focused on modern languages, especially French and German. He had hoped to join the British Army after college. However, old rugby injuries prevented him from doing so.
Eddy is close to his third cousin Princess Beatrice. He is also close to his younger sisters, Lady Marina and Lady Amelia Windsor. Lady Amelia is a well-known fashion model. His great-grandmother, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, was a fashion icon in the royal family after World War II.
Eddy's Career
Eddy Downpatrick first thought about starting a fashion brand in 2009. This idea came to him while he was hiking in Scotland. But he decided to focus on his studies first. He also worked as a financial analyst at JP Morgan. This job involved studying money and investments.
In 2016, Eddy left his job at JP Morgan. He then started working as a fashion designer. In 2017, he helped create a fashion company called FIDIR with Justine Dalby. He is currently the creative director for this brand.
FIDIR specializes in outdoor clothing and accessories. They make items like handbags, wallets, sweatshirts, and T-shirts. Eddy's designs are inspired by the beautiful Scottish Highlands.
In 2021, Eddy started a travel company called Aristeia Travel. This company plans trips and adventures to many places around the world. These destinations include Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The company also arranges exciting sports trips. These include heliskiing (skiing from a helicopter) and whale watching.
Eddy is also a partner at Wheeler-Windsor Expeditions. He works with Jack Wheeler to offer special trips to clients.
Royal Succession Rules
In 2003, when Eddy was 15, he made an important decision. He chose to be confirmed into the Catholic Church. He had been baptized in the Church of England. His grandmother, the Duchess of Kent, and his uncle, Lord Nicholas Windsor, had also become Catholic.
Because of this choice, Eddy was no longer in the line of succession to the British throne. This rule comes from the Act of Settlement 1701. This law states that a person cannot become king or queen if they are Catholic. Eddy is the highest-ranking person in the royal family who is excluded because he is Catholic.
In January 2025, if he had not become Catholic, he would have been 44th in line to the throne. However, Eddy remains second in line to become the Duke of Kent. He is after his father in this line.
