The Duke of Kent and Strathearn was a special royal title. It was created only once in the Peerage of Great Britain, which is a system of noble titles in the United Kingdom. This title was held by just one person.

What Was the Dukedom of Kent and Strathearn?

A "dukedom" is the rank or area ruled by a duke, who is a very high-ranking noble. The Dukedom of Kent and Strathearn was a unique title. It combined two different places: Kent in England and Strathearn in Scotland.

Before this, there were other titles like the Earls of Kent and even a Duke of Kent. For example, Henry Grey was made Duke of Kent in 1710. But that title ended when he passed away in 1740.

How the Title Began

The Dukedom of Kent and Strathearn was created on April 23, 1799. King George III gave this important title to his fourth son, Prince Edward Augustus. Prince Edward also received another title at the same time: the Earl of Dublin.

After the Act of Union 1707, which joined Great Britain into one country, kings often gave out "double titles." This meant one title came from one part of the United Kingdom and another from a different part. This was a way to show that the country was united.

Prince Edward and His Famous Daughter

Prince Edward Augustus was born on November 2, 1767, in London. His parents were King George III and Queen Charlotte. In 1818, he married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld.

Prince Edward and Princess Victoria had only one child together. This child was a daughter named Princess Alexandrina Victoria. She later became the famous Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom!

Why the Title Ended

Sadly, Prince Edward passed away on January 23, 1820, at the age of 52. He died in Sidmouth. Because he had no sons who were born in marriage, the Dukedom of Kent and Strathearn title ended with him. It became "extinct," meaning it no longer existed.
