Early Short Films
Early in her career, Jeong Jae-eun wrote and directed several short films. These are movies that are shorter than a regular feature film. One of her notable short films was Yu-jin's Secret Codes. This film won a big award called the Grand Prix at the KNUA Graduation Film Festival. It also won an award at the Women's Film Festival in Seoul in 1999.
First Feature Film
Jeong's first full-length movie was Take Care of My Cat, released in 2001. This film tells a story about friendship and growing up among five young women in their twenties. The movie was very successful and won many awards at film festivals around the world.
For example, it won the NETPAC Award and a special mention at the Pusan International Film Festival. It also received the FIPRESCI Prize at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. Jeong Jae-eun herself won the Best New Director award at the 2002 Korean Film Awards.
Other Films and Projects
In 2003, Jeong made a short film called The Man with an Affair. This short film was part of a bigger project called If You Were Me. This project was an anthology film, which means it was a collection of short films by different directors. The project focused on human rights.
Her second full-length movie was The Aggressives (2005). This film was about young people in Seoul who loved inline skating. It was also shown at the Berlinale, which is a big film festival in Berlin, Germany.
In 2010, she made another short film called Hakim & Barchin. This film was asked for by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in South Korea.
Documentary Filmmaking
Around 2009, Jeong Jae-eun became very interested in making documentary films. Documentaries are movies that show real events and people. She started focusing on topics like cities, the environment, and buildings.
Her first full-length documentary was Talking Architect (2012). This film was about the last few years of a famous Korean architect named Chung Guyon. For independent documentaries, selling 10,000 tickets is usually a big success. However, Talking Architect sold over 36,500 tickets because many people talked positively about it.
After that, Jeong made another documentary about architecture called City: Hall (2013). This film looked closely at the design and changes made to Seoul's new City Hall. It explored the creative, political, and official challenges involved in the project.
