Jeongjong: A King Who Protected His Kingdom
King Jeongjong cared a lot about keeping his country safe. He worked hard to protect Goryeo from invaders.
Building Strong Defenses
Right after he became king, Jeongjong started building strong fortresses. These forts were built along the northern border of Goryeo. This was to defend against attacks from other kingdoms. In 1037, the Liao dynasty tried to invade Goryeo. But Jeongjong's efforts helped protect the land.
A huge wall was also built across northern Korea. This wall was called the Cheolli Jangseong. It was finished in 1044 during Jeongjong's reign. This massive wall was a big step in Goryeo's defense.
Supporting the Army
Jeongjong also made sure his soldiers were well taken care of. In 1036, he gave land to soldiers who were poor. This helped them and their families. It also made the army stronger and more loyal.
A New Law for Future Kings
Just before he passed away in 1046, King Jeongjong made an important law. This law was about who would become king next. It was called primogeniture. This meant that the oldest son would always become king. This helped make sure the transfer of power was smooth.
