Jerrod Carmichael, born on April 6, 1987, is an American comedian, actor, writer, and filmmaker. He is known for his stand-up comedy specials and his work in television and movies.
He grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and later moved to Los Angeles. There, he started his career in comedy clubs in the early 2010s. Carmichael has released several stand-up comedy specials on HBO. One of these, Rothaniel (2022), won a Primetime Emmy Award. He also helped create and star in The Carmichael Show, a TV show on NBC.
In 2021, Carmichael directed, produced, and starred in his first feature film, On the Count of Three. He also hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live in 2022, which earned him an Emmy nomination. In 2023, he hosted the 80th Golden Globe Awards and appeared in the movie Poor Things. In 2024, he was featured in the HBO documentary series Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show.

Early Life and Education
Jerrod Carmichael was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on April 6, 1987. He has an older brother named Joe. Growing up, his family did not have a lot of money, which he sometimes talks about in his comedy.
When he was in fifth grade, he hosted a morning news show at his elementary school. He graduated from Robert B. Glenn High School in Kernersville, North Carolina, in 2005.
Career Highlights
Carmichael moved to Los Angeles when he was 20 years old to become a stand-up comedian. He had never tried it before. His first time performing was at an open mic night at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood. He worked hard in comedy clubs and was featured at the 2011 Just for Laughs Festival.
Early Acting and Comedy Specials
Carmichael appeared on the TV show The Goodwin Games in 2013. He then had a big acting role in the movie Neighbors (2014). His first HBO stand-up comedy special, Love at the Store (2014), was directed by Spike Lee.
His second stand-up special, 8 (2017), was directed by his friend and fellow comedian Bo Burnham. It was filmed in New York City.
Television Shows and Documentaries
Carmichael co-created, co-wrote, produced, and starred in The Carmichael Show (2015–2017) on NBC. This show was praised for discussing important topics. He also helped produce the Fox sitcom Rel (2018–2019). He directed Drew Michael's stand-up special Drew Michael (2018), which was known for its unique style.
In 2019, Carmichael appeared on rapper Tyler, the Creator's album Igor. He also created, directed, produced, and starred in two HBO documentaries about his life: Home Videos (2019) and Sermon on the Mount (2019).
Film Directing and Recent Work
His first movie as a director was On the Count of Three (2021). He also produced and starred in this film. It was shown at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
His third HBO special, Rothaniel (2022), was also directed by Bo Burnham. This special won Carmichael a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. Soon after, he hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time. For this, he was nominated for an Emmy Award. He also won a Writers Guild of America Award for writing Rothaniel.
In 2023, Carmichael hosted the 80th Golden Globe Awards. That same year, he acted in the Academy Award-winning movie Poor Things alongside Emma Stone. In 2024, he starred in Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, an HBO documentary series about his life. His fourth stand-up special, Don't Be ... (2025), premiered on Max.
