Rothaniel Jerrod Carmichael (born April 6, 1987) is an American comedian, actor, writer, and filmmaker.
He was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Later, he moved to Los Angeles to start his career in comedy. He became known in the early 2010s.
Carmichael has released three stand-up comedy shows on HBO. These are Love at the Store (2014), 8 (2017), and Rothaniel (2022). Rothaniel won a big award called the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
He also helped create, write, and star in a TV show called The Carmichael Show (2015–2017). This show was based on parts of his own life.
In 2021, Carmichael directed his first movie. It was a dark comedy film called On the Count of Three. He also produced and starred in it. In 2022, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for hosting an episode of Saturday Night Live.
In 2023, Carmichael hosted the 80th Golden Globe Awards. He also acted in the movie Poor Things, which won an Oscar. In 2024, he was featured in an HBO documentary series about his life. This show, Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, first showed at South by Southwest.

Rothaniel Jerrod Carmichael was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His birthday is April 6, 1987. He has an older brother named Joe.
He grew up in a family that didn't have a lot of money. He often talks about this in his comedy shows. When he was in fifth grade, he hosted a morning news show. This show was on his elementary school's local TV channel.
In 2005, he finished high school. He graduated from Robert B. Glenn High School in Kernersville, North Carolina.
Career Highlights
Carmichael moved to Los Angeles when he was 20 years old. He wanted to become a stand-up comedian. He had never tried it before. His very first time doing stand-up was at an open mic night. This was at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood.
He worked hard in comedy clubs. In 2011, he was part of the "New Faces" show. This was at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal. He appeared on the TV show The Goodwin Games in 2013. His first big acting role was in the movie Neighbors (2014).
His first HBO stand-up comedy special was Love at the Store (2014). The famous director Spike Lee directed it. It was filmed at The Comedy Store.
Carmichael's second stand-up special was 8 (2017). His friend and fellow comedian Bo Burnham directed it. It was filmed in New York City. Next, Carmichael helped create and star in The Carmichael Show (2015–2017). This TV show was about his life. It was praised for talking about important topics. These included gun rights and what it's like to be Black in America.
He also helped produce a TV show called Rel (2018–2019). He directed a stand-up special for Drew Michael in 2018. This special was liked for its "unusual style."
In 2019, Carmichael appeared on rapper Tyler, the Creator's album Igor. He narrated parts of the album. That same year, he was asked by Quentin Tarantino to help write a movie. In 2023, Carmichael hosted the 80th Golden Globe Awards. He also acted in the movie Poor Things with Emma Stone. This movie won an Oscar.
In 2024, he starred in Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show. This was an HBO documentary series about his life. The series was shown at South by Southwest in March 2024. It then came out on HBO later that month.
