Jerry Royster's Baseball Journey
Jerry Royster started his baseball career when he was just 17 years old. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed him in 1970. Three years later, in 1973, he joined the Dodgers' main team.
In 1975, Jerry was traded to the Atlanta Braves. He quickly became a regular player at third base for them. In 1976, he was even named to the Topps All-Star Rookie Roster. This meant he was one of the best new players that year.
After playing for the Braves for nine years, Royster joined the San Diego Padres. This was in 1985. In 1987, he played for two different teams: the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. He returned to the Braves for his final season in 1988 before retiring.
Over his 16 seasons in MLB, Jerry Royster played in 1,428 games. He had a batting average of .249. This means he got a hit almost 25% of the times he tried to hit the ball. He also hit 40 home runs and stole 189 bases.
Coaching and Managing Career
After his playing days, Jerry Royster became a coach. He coached for the Vero Beach Dodgers and was a third base coach for the Colorado Rockies.
Managing the Milwaukee Brewers
In 2000, he joined the Milwaukee Brewers as a coach. In 2002, the Brewers' manager was fired. Jerry Royster was then named the interim manager. This means he took over temporarily. Two weeks later, he became the official manager. However, the team had a tough season, and he was fired at the end of the year.
Managing in South Korea
From 2005 to 2006, Royster managed the Las Vegas 51s. Then, in 2007, he got a special opportunity. He was hired to manage the Lotte Giants in Busan, South Korea. He was the first non-Korean person to manage a team in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). Because of his work, he even received honorary citizenship in Busan in 2008.
His time with the Lotte Giants ended in 2010. The team lost in the playoffs, and his contract was not renewed.
Later Coaching Roles
In 2012, Jerry Royster returned to MLB as the third-base coach for the Boston Red Sox. In 2014, he coached a high school team, the Shalhevet Firehawks. They finished in second place in their league.
