Jerome Cardell White, born on August 23, 1952, is an American former professional baseball player. He was an outfielder and later became a coach. Jerry White was known as a switch hitter, meaning he could bat from both sides of the plate. He threw the ball with his right hand.

White played for 11 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). His teams included the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals. He also played two seasons in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). After his playing career, he worked as a first base coach for the Minnesota Twins for many years.

Jerry White's Baseball Career

Jerry White began his professional baseball journey after being chosen by the Montreal Expos. This happened in the 14th round of the 1970 Major League Baseball draft. He was picked from Washington High School in San Francisco.

Starting in the Major Leagues

White made his first big league appearance on September 16, 1974. He played center field for the Expos at Jarry Park in Montreal. In that game, the Expos lost to the New York Mets.

His first full season in MLB was in 1976. He played 114 games for the Expos. He had a .245 batting average, hit two home runs, and had 21 RBI.

Playing for the Cubs and Back to the Expos

On June 23, 1978, Jerry White was traded to the Chicago Cubs. He played 59 games for the Cubs. During his time there, he batted .272, hit one home run, and had 10 RBI.

Later that year, on December 14, 1978, White was traded back to the Montreal Expos. He returned to the team where he started his major league career.

Final MLB Season

In December 1985, White joined the St. Louis Cardinals. He played his last major league game on June 9, 1986. It was against the Montreal Expos, the team he spent most of his career with.

Over 11 seasons and 646 games, White had a .253 batting average. He scored 155 runs, hit 21 home runs, and had 109 RBI. He also stole 57 stolen bases. White was a good fielder, playing all three outfield positions with a .974 fielding percentage.

Playing in Winter Leagues

Jerry White also played baseball in the winter months. He played for teams in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. These teams included the Navegantes del Magallanes and Águilas del Zulia.

A special moment in his career happened in the 1979 Caribbean Series. Playing for the Magallanes, White was the only player to get a hit in every game. He led all hitters with an amazing .522 batting average. He also had 12 hits and scored five runs.

Becoming a Coach

After he stopped playing, Jerry White became a baseball coach. In 1998, he was hired as the first base coach for the Minnesota Twins. He coached for the Twins for many years. In October 2012, the Twins made changes to their coaching staff, and White left his coaching role.

Honors and Achievements

Jerry White received a special honor in February 2006. He was inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame. This Hall of Fame recognizes players who have made important contributions to the Caribbean Series. He was honored alongside other great players for his excellent performance in the tournament.

Jerry White has two sons, named Justin and Jerome. He also has a daughter, named Noell.
