Where is Jersey Island?
Jersey Island is surrounded by several waterways that are part of the large Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. To its west, you'll find the San Joaquin River and the Stockton Deepwater Shipping Channel. The False River is to its north. On the northeast side, there's Piper Slough. To the east, you'll see Taylor Slough, and to the south, it's bordered by Dutch Slough.
What is a Delta?
A delta is a special type of landform that looks a bit like a triangle. It forms when a river slows down and spreads out as it gets close to a larger body of water, like a bay or the ocean. The river drops off all the mud, sand, and tiny rocks it has been carrying. Over time, these materials build up, creating new land and many small channels for the water to flow through. The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is one of the largest river deltas in the western United States.
Who Manages Jersey Island?
Jersey Island is managed by an organization called Reclamation District 830. A Reclamation District is a local government group in California. Their main job is to manage land, often in delta areas. They work to protect the land from floods and make sure water is available for farming or other uses. They might build and maintain levees, which are like walls that keep water from flooding the land.
