Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Jessica Poland was adopted by her parents, Hartson and Tracy Poland, when she was a baby. She met her birth mother when she was 13 years old.
When Jessica was 14, she started playing guitar and writing her own songs. Around the same time, she was diagnosed with a rare jaw condition. This condition made it hard for her to sing. By age 16, she had surgery to rebuild her face using parts of her ribs. She still gets injections to help with her jaw.
Jessica grew up in Wall Township, New Jersey. She went to Wall High School.
She got her first stage name, Charlotte Sometimes, from a children's book. The book, written by Penelope Farmer in 1969, is about a student who travels back in time.
