Music Journey
Starting Out with Muddy Magnolias
After high school, Jessy started her music career. She sang backup for famous artist Alicia Keys on her albums and during her tours. In 2013, Jessy moved to Nashville, Tennessee. This city is known for its music scene. There, she met Kallie North, and they formed the band Muddy Magnolias. They also received guidance from singer John Legend.
Muddy Magnolias gained a lot of attention at the CMA Music Festival in 2014. The magazine Rolling Stone even compared Jessy's singing to the legendary Aretha Franklin. The group later signed with Third Generation Records. They released their album called Broken People in 2016. In 2017, Kallie North left the band, and Muddy Magnolias stopped making music together.
Becoming a Solo Artist
After Muddy Magnolias broke up, Jessy Wilson started creating art. Her art style was similar to the famous painter Pablo Picasso. On January 15, 2019, Jessy released her first solo song, "Love & Sophistication." She also released a lyric video for the song with French words.
This song was part of her first solo album, Phase. The album was released on May 3, 2019. It was produced by Patrick Carney, who is the drummer for the band The Black Keys. Jessy explained that the album title Phase means she is going through different stages as an artist, just like Dylan or Picasso. She said the album connects her past with who she is becoming. Thirty Tigers Records released the album.
Jessy described "Love & Sophistication" as an R&B song with a 1960s or 1970s feel. She told V magazine that she wanted the song to be about more than just a romantic relationship. She wanted it to be about a relationship that grows and includes sophistication. The music video for the song first appeared on V magazine's website on February 15, 2019. In the video, Jessy sings in a dark room with French words appearing on screen.
