Jill Greenberg, born on July 10, 1967, is a talented photographer and artist. She was born in Canada but is an American citizen. She is famous for her unique portraits and fine art.
Greenberg often photographs animals that look like they have human feelings and expressions. She uses digital tools to make her photos look like paintings. Her animal pictures are special because they show many different emotions, almost like a skilled actor. Some of the monkeys and other primates she has photographed are even famous from TV shows or movies! She is also well-known for her stylish photos of celebrities like Gwen Stefani, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Clint Eastwood. Jill Greenberg likes to put her own strong ideas into her artwork. She says her photos are "personal but there's a little twist going on. An edge."
Many big companies hire Greenberg for her photography. These include Sony Pictures, Rolling Stone magazine, Time magazine, and HBO.

About Jill Greenberg
Jill Greenberg was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She grew up in a suburb near Detroit, Michigan, in the United States.
She started taking pictures when she was only 9 years old. Her mother was a computer programmer, and her father was a doctor.
Greenberg studied art at places like the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 1984, she took a photography class in Paris. She also won a scholarship for travel in 1985. In 1989, she earned her degree in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Jill Greenberg's Photography Career
In 1992, Jill Greenberg began working for Sassy magazine. This helped her start her career in art and commercial photography.
She is known for her celebrity portraits. She uses computers to add special effects that make the photos look like paintings.
The Glass Ceiling Series
In 2011, Greenberg created her "Glass Ceiling" series. For these photos, she took pictures underwater. She used scuba gear and photographed professional synchronized swimmers in a pool. The "Glass Ceiling" series was even shown on a large billboard in Los Angeles. This series explored ideas about women facing challenges.
The Horse Photography Book
In October 2012, Greenberg released a book of photographs called Horse. This book features amazing pictures of horses. To take these photos, she built special photo studios inside horse rings. She took pictures in Los Angeles and also in Vancouver, Canada. In January 2014, she had an exhibition in Canada to show these "Horse" images.
Political Art and Photography
In August 2008, The Atlantic magazine asked Jill Greenberg to photograph John McCain for their October cover. She allowed them to use one of her photos for free, but she kept the ownership of the picture. Greenberg decided to create some personal art from these photos. She released them on voting day, seeing them as "political cartoons." She felt she was using her art to express her views.
Jill Greenberg's Artistic Style
Many people in the photography world say that Jill Greenberg has created unique styles. Other photographers have even copied her look. One creative director said, "Jill has started a new style of photography." Her work is known for its "distinctive ethereal backlighting," which means a special, glowing light from behind. Many photographers follow her lead because of her "distinct and innovative aesthetic."
In 1995, Greenberg named her first website "The Manipulator." This was because she was one of the first photographers to use Photoshop when it came out in 1990. She uses digital tools a lot to change her photos. However, she also says that much of her unique look comes from careful lighting, with only small "flourishes" added later.
Exploring Feminist Ideas
Jill Greenberg's work sometimes focuses on feminism, which is about equal rights for women. This started with her college project called "The Female Object." Her "Glass Ceiling" series also explores these ideas. For this series, she photographed synchronized swimmers wearing high heels underwater. This showed women struggling in a difficult situation, representing the challenges women can face.
