About Jill Greenberg
Jill Greenberg was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She grew up in a town near Detroit, Michigan, in the United States.
Early Life and Education
Jill started taking pictures when she was just 9 years old. Her mother was a computer programmer, and her father was a doctor.
She took art classes at places like the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 1984, she studied photography in Paris during a summer program. She even won a scholarship in 1985 to help her travel and learn more.
In 1989, Jill graduated with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design. She earned a special degree in Photography.
Jill Greenberg's Photography Career
In 1992, Jill Greenberg began working for Sassy magazine. This helped her start her artistic career while doing commercial photography.
Famous Portraits and Digital Art
Greenberg is well-known for her celebrity portraits. She uses computers to add painterly effects to her photos, making them look like paintings.
In 2011, she created a series called "Glass Ceiling." For this project, she took photos underwater using scuba gear. She photographed professional synchronized swimmers in a pool. These "Glass Ceiling" photos were even shown on a large billboard in Los Angeles!
Capturing Horses
In October 2012, Jill Greenberg released a book of photographs called Horse. It's filled with beautiful images of horses. To get these shots, she built special photo studios inside horse rings. She took pictures in Los Angeles and also in Vancouver, at a ranch that provides horses for movies.
In January 2014, her "Horse" exhibition was shown in Canada.
Art and Ideas
In 2008, a magazine called The Atlantic asked her to photograph John McCain, who was running for president. Jill let them use one of her photos for free. She then decided to create some personal art from these pictures. She released them on voting day, saying she saw them as "political cartoons." She felt she was using her art to share her opinions.
How Jill Greenberg Influenced Art
Her Unique Style
Many people in the photography world say Jill Greenberg has created several unique styles. Other photographers have even copied her look. One creative director said, "Like LaChapelle and Avedon, Jill has pioneered a new style of photography." Her work is known for its "distinctive ethereal backlighting," which means a special, glowing light from behind.
An NBC executive who hired her often said that "many other photographers follow her lead."
In 1995, Jill called her first website "The Manipulator." This was inspired by an old German photography magazine.
Jill Greenberg has used digital tools a lot, especially Photoshop, since it first came out in 1990. That's partly why she got the nickname "The Manipulator" early on. However, she once said that some things people think are digital tricks are actually from her careful lighting. The digital work just adds small "flourishes."
Art and Women's Issues
Jill Greenberg's art and career have sometimes focused on feminist issues. Her college project, "The Female Object," was about this. Her art often shows women trying to succeed in a world that has many rules and limits for them.
